Wow.

Probably the most valuable assistant coach MU has lost in the past decade.

17) Dwayne Stephens, Michigan State — Stephens, 36, enjoyed a similar path as his colleague, Mark Montgomery. He played for Tom Izzo from 1989-93, played overseas and then spent a couple years at the mid-major level (Oakland University) before returning to his alma mater. Stephens also worked for four seasons under Tom Crean at Marquette in-between his Oakland State and coming back to East Lansing.

Key Recruits: Dwyane Wade, Steve Novak, Travis Diener, Delvon Roe and Raymar Morgan.

I'm not sure I would have been thrilled if we'd hired him as our head guy, but I wouldn't have been nearly as perplexed.

If we were going after an assistant, I would have zeroed in on Ohio State's number 1.  Midwest ties, working with Matta, Ohio is rich in talent as is Michigan.  Heavily involved in recruiting a national runner-up team, etc.

Not too sure about that "key recruits" list. I'm sure Stephens may have played a role in landing those guys, but I'm not sure he was "the" guy.
I know, for example, that Tim Buckley had much more to do with Wade coming to Marquette than Stephens.

Glad you posted that.

If you read the replies at the bottom of the article, it seems that the article's writer contributed some of the players to the incorrect assistants and, on some others, stretched it a bit. The "Wade" recruitment is a good example. Furthermore, you'll read some people's dissatisfaction with this angle.
