QuoteGolden Eagles can be up to three feet long with a wingspan of over 7 feet. Here's a video of a Golden Eagle hunting for food, a process that involves throwing live goats off of cliffs and then scavenging the carcass. If you're at all sensitive about seeing animals die, you really shouldn't watch this. For everyone else, the only way this could be more fascinating is if Richard Attenborough were narrating.

I beleive that the Golden Eagle is the fiercest of the eagles.  Now, our mascaot has been declawed a bit, but in real life (LOL) I beieve that is true about golden eagles.....

I assume that we are discussing the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle...

PuertoRicanNightmare

Golden Eagles is the worst thing that has ever happened to our athletic programs and has fractured alumni relations at Marquette more than anything in the school's history.

There is a lot that is great about Marquette, but the nickname change opened the eyes of thousands of people about what is not so great.

Daniel

I agree about the name change - we had a president here a few years and he changes the name.  I am not saying I like Golden Eagles better than Warriors.  We are warriors.  The lord is a warrior, I don't see why we can't be.  But alas, I do not think that will ever be revisited, unless native americans rise up and demand it.  Yeah.

Captain, We need more sweatervests!  TheManInGold has been blinded by the light (off the technicolor sweatervest)

WOW!!!!!  That is bad a$$...  I have a whole new resprect for golden eagles

BrewCity83

I don't think those are goats...they look like badgers to me.
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

As long as we are on the subject of the nickname, while on vacation came across another school with GE as nickname. Even the mascot logo looks like ours. I guess theirs makes sense as there are actually eagles in the area. Saw a few when golfing.

We have the lamest nickname ever! Go Warriors.

When our administration gets a hold of this video, we'll have to change our name again because the Golden Eagle is too vicious and portrays an image of terror to the animal kingdom.

Face it, our nickname is lame.

There are only two kinds of people in the world, Golden Eagles, and those who want to be Golden Eagles!

Would that comment be towards PRN?

When the university came out and said that they would now be the Gold, I responded as I did when they came out and said we would be the Golden Eagles.

We were the Warriors under Al; we were the Warriors when people wanted to change the name; we were the warriors when the board felt like calling us Gold; we are the Warriors now.

Warriors Forever.

Doctor V

in 10 years, people will use warriors just as much as they use hilltoppers... tradition is great, but it will be just that. Marquette is now, and maybe forever, the Golden Eagles

muwarrior87

except for MSG when they put Warriors up when we play there and when the older announcers all call us the Warriors...

Keep telling yourself that.

It's already been 14 years. It's completely, utterly and unnecessarily pathetic. Our own fans hate it!

I would pay a lot to see the same video with Badgers instead of Goats!!!!!

haha i love your passion. they liked it more than any other nickname option- warriors was not an option, just like chief illiniwek is no longer an option

muwarrior87

and this is what's wrong with our 'don't offend anyone' nation and world we live in.  good lord people, it's pc bs like this that has taken God right out of Canada and Europe and made the EU and our neighbors to the north as secular as they are today! God is a warrior and we will always be WARRIORS!!

The pussification of America is well well established at this point....the next thing you know is they'll be banning tag in the school yard.

I'm not sure if that's supposed to be sarcasm or not, but I've heard of a handful of schools that have. Don't remember the reason why though.

Dienerfor3

What about the NBA Golden State Warriors?  They have the name and it is not a problem.  Why should we have to be afraid to switch back?  The Illini could be trouble because it pertained to one particular Chief or tribe, what is wrong with Warriors?

That's a great point. Chief Illiniwek is no longer an option, but the "Fighting Illini" nickname remains! How does that work?

You're saying, get rid of the Indian mascot and the nickname can stay? Interesting concept!

Look, you can cite any number of examples of teams that had Indian nicknames...Stanford, Dartmouth, St. John's. That's all well and good. WE DID NOT HAVE A NICKNAME THAT WAS EXCLUSIVE TO INDIANS!!

And, for our Native American friends...I'd like you to explain to me what is offensive about calling somebody...no matter their origin...a warrior. Or a Brave.

There are some liberal groups in this country who have taken it upon themselves to dictate to groups, perhaps less fortunate, when they are being offended. Being called a "Warrior" does not fall into the offensive category any more than calling somebody a "Brave" or a "Spartan."
