Good for Buzz Williams, who got the Marquette job as an assistant. Not a lot of assistants get head coaching jobs of this stature. But let's also not dismiss what happened a year ago. Last summer, Williams walked out on the New Orleans job. Jim Miller, the Privateers' athletic director, trashed Williams in July for leaving. The situation was dire at the time but Cal assistant Joe Pasternack walked in there and made them winners. At the time, Williams felt he was being misled and that the situation was worse off than he had imagined. His rebound from that situation to getting the head coaching job at Marquette is quite remarkable and rather unheard of in today's climate.

Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

People everywhere are shaking their heads. It truly is the Gold all over again. I heard similar reaction from DeCourcey on WGN Radio last month.

There is something very wrong going on here. Very wrong.

This just in - Andy Katz is a badger-loving D-bag.

There's a difference between loving the Badgers and laughing at Marquette.

I no longer think we should have interviewed him.

Marquette_g

PRN - I know you aren't a fan, but why do Katz's comments influence that at all?

Something is rotten in the state of Marquette. This just doesn't make sense. I can't wrap my head around it, and I want more than anything to believe that MU did what was best. But it is the Gold all over again. Just a half-assed patch job to a real problem where there were real solutions available. Ugh.

What amazes me the most about Katz's comments is HOW he found the time to take a break from removing his lips from Crean's butt to say anything at all!

Is this the right hire? Of course not.

But what else could MU do? What names could they lure? No one was biting...

The blame is partly on Crean - for not manning up and trying to clean before leaving his crap stinking all over MU - and on the AD - for not preparing for this possibility.

Exactly Avenue Commons. There is no justification for this hire and the press conference basically reinforced that. There was no joy. No excitement. No sense of a new beginning.

There is no way they could have done the extensive search that was described and had it end like this. It's inexplicable.

Here's hoping somebody talks about the process with the fanbase because I think some answers are needed.

I have a really, really bad feeling about this.

Marquette_g

Saying there was NO excitement is a bit of an over-statment.

You're right. I know Buzz and his family were excited, although I think flabbergasted might be more accurate.

PRN, did you go to the press conference? Honest question, no snide remark here. I'm just asking because those in the stands near me seemed to have a good reaction (at least the group of alums--2 of whom were wearing Warriors shirts--seemed impressed)

Marquette_g

I was there myself and I wouldn't say people were jumping up and down, but there was certainly a level of excitement.  I would add that I think the bulk of the people left with a better feeling than they came with.

I don't think this is the right hire either, but I also don't think it is fair to project my opinion of the hire to the overall mood of the press conference.

I watched it. And I'd describe the first 10 minutes of it as "somber."

Marquette_g

I think you're interpretation did not match the mood inside the gym.

HelixAir6

I watched the whole thing too, and I can't say that it sounded somber, but it did sound quiet.  However, I also noticed, that when certain announcers asked questions without the mic, you couldn't hear a word they were saying, so it was prob how the system was set up in the Al.  Therefore, i could understand how we got less enthusiasm from the video that we might have noticed if we were there live.
