Reggie Rankin from Scouts, Inc.
« on: April 08, 2008, 12:40:45 PM »
From a chat on ESPN today:

Eric , DC: Buzz Williams, new coach at Marquette, has a reputation as a great recruiter. As a recruiting expert, what do you know about him both on the recruiting side, and the coaching side? Thanks...

Reggie Rankin: (1:25 PM ET ) Eric, not a lot as a coach but he has a reputation as a relentless recruiter that when he locks in on a kid he get's it done. That's the word on the street.

This is a guy who follows recruiting for a living.  He's relying on hearsay to judge his recruiting.  Furthermore, he knows nothing of him as a coach.  I actually expect big things from Buzz, both from a recruiting, and overall success, standpoint.  But it is a little disheartening to see the lack of knowledge and support for Buzz from ANYWHERE in the college game.

But still, he's the head coach for Marquette now, and until he proves otherwise, that's good enough for me.  Prove everyone wrong, Buzz!

Okay... well for 2009 he should start to lock in on Jamil, Erik Williams, Lacy, & Rowley!!

I'd be willing to bet that in the next two years Marquette will have its best class since the 70s.....no doubt in my mind.

I'm in the minority when I say I like the hire.

Tom Crean and Billy Gillispie praise the bejeebus out of the guy, and it apparently doesn't mean much.

But if a former Dayton assistant who now draws a salary by writing for an Internet recruiting site he doesn't know much about the guy's coaching (as if he would), it's disheartening?

Hmmm.
