Tranghese helps in search
By Bob Wolfley
Wednesday, Apr 2 2008, 01:58 PM
Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese is helping Marquette University in its search to replace Tom Crean.

Tranghese said he talked with MU athletic director Steve Cottingham Wednesday morning about potential candidates.

He declined to say what names he discussed.

Tranghese said he gave Cottingham three possibilities and Cottingham already had those on his list.

Tranghese has known Crean since Crean was an assistant at Pittsburgh.

"I think it's a good move for he and Joani," Tranghese said. "But to be honest with you I am more focused right now on helping Marquette hire his replacement. I think Tom has certainly left the Marquette program in better shape than when he inherited it. Marquette is the kind of program now that I think is capable of going out and hiring a very, very good basketball coach."

Tranghese said he provides whatever help a member school wants in these circumstances.

"I can give them names," Tranghese said. "I can evaluate names for them, I can make unofficial contacts. It all depends on the school."

This is very good news. The BEast is the biggest and arguably best basketball conference in D-1. Any high quality coach worth hiring will covet this job.

Certainly not bad news....this is why MU can't mess up this hire....Crean left this program at a level way better then he took it, now is the time to cash in some of this chips and hire someone to keep it going.

Be confident, Chicos.

I'm trying.....if I identify about 4 people still in the Univ. administration that could be kidnapped for about 2 weeks and put in a basement until this is decided, I'd feel better.   :-\
