As I see it, we've had coaches who could coach but couldn't recruit, and lately a coach who couldn't coach but could recruit. With some luck this time we'll hit the jackpot and get one who can do both!

could you please tell me who Crean recruited? Wade (crap shot) and our  trio of guard stars who came to Marquette because of Wade?  Where were the big guys?

There's a couple white guys in the NBA, I think Crean had something to do with them ...

Three (potentially 6) NBA players in 9 years ain't too shabby.

James and McNeal were not highly recruited and therefore cannot be considered the prizes of a good recruiting job. Who did we beat out? Dayton and Evansville?

His recruiting has been average at best.

ErickJD08

... Diener Novak and Wade.  Wes Matthews will probably not make it.  Point being Wade brought our three stars in, not Crean.  Not a valid point? Why has he only been able to recruit guards and no one special since the Final Four run?

Recruiting is more than "beating" other coaches. Just as important (if not moreso) is talent evaluation. The fact that most of Crean's best players were not highly recruited is, in my opinion, a positive thing for him. It means he was able to identify future stars that other coaches couldn't see.

Now, would I trade talent evaluation for the ability to recruit a Top 10 player every year? Of course. But the point is, the ability to recruit is irrelevant if you're targeting a bunch of future busts.

So we're still debating Crean's recruiting abilities after he's gone?

Who gives a sh!t. Let's get ourselves a new coach.

ErickJD08

True...  There has to be something to the fact that he could not recruit anyone with talent that was over 6'6.  I think its the Wade factor (guards aspiring to be like Wade) and lack of recruiting ability

The statement about James and McNeal is ridiculous. McNeal was a third-team Parade All-American. He was also named first team all-state by AP, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune. James was also a first team all-state selection, and #2 in the voting for Indiana Mr. Basketball as a senior in 2005.  They were both big-time recruits. If you want to talk about Crean's failure to land a blue-chip player taller than 6'6," that's a different story. But I bet he won't have that problem at Indiana.

Ummm ... James and McNeal were both top 100 players.
Scout rated James the #6 PG in the country and #43 overall. Rivals had him #10/#61. Both listed among the schools recruiting him as Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State and Purdue. IIRC, his finalists were MU and Purdue.

Scout rated McNeal #54 overall. Rivals had him #99.

Apparently they were that rarest of breed: Four star, top 100 players nobody really wanted.
Ugh.  ::)
