Why not hire him now and save the trouble, the guy seems ready to lead a big program.  His credentials are great, check it:

"Prior to UNO, Williams served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M for two seasons (2004-05 - 2005-06) under head coach Billy Gillispie. Both of his recruiting classes with the Aggies were ranked among the best in the nation and featured some of the top-ranked talent at the prep level......

Williams spent four seasons (2000-01 - 2003-04) at Colorado State, serving as an assistant the first three seasons before being promoted to associate head coach in 2003-04. Two of his recruiting classes were ranked among the 40-best in the nation, including the 2003 group, which was tabbed No. 1 in the Western Athletic Conference.....

Colorado State made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 years during his tenure and he was named one of the top assistants in the country by HoopScoop Online."

Better yet, let's keep Buzz as an assistant.
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

PuertoRicanNightmare

He's not qualified to be a Big East head coach. Not even close. Naming him would be lazy and an acknowledgement that we're not really a big time program.

PTK8ofBH

While that would be nice in terms of keeping some of our recruits, a source with the team (who wishes to remain anonymous) says that Buzz Williams will not be the head coach next year, which makes you wonder if he will follow Crean to Indiana.

esotericmindguy

Why is he not qualified?  What made Crean so qualified?

MU wasn't in the Big East and the program wasn't as "big time" in 1999.  I think Buzz would be OK, but we can set our sights higher now than when Crean was hired.

I think our situation is very similar to Kansas state last year when Huggins left and Frank Martin was named.  Rosiak now reports that the only way Tyshawn Taylor comes to MU is if Buzz Williams is the HC.

Not head coach, but coaching in some capacity.  Lets face it, the main duty in CBB is recruiting, which he can obviously do.  Other then that, its freakin basketball, as long as the players believe and battle for you, coaching is easy.

Promote Buzz. Take the time to find a replacement.

Doing so would keep Fulce and possibly Taylor, no?

No disrespect to Taylor, I'm sure he's a fine player, but he's not quite as good as Beasley.

Lets not forget that Buzz landed O'Tule and Erik Williams, its gaurantee that Williams won't show up...verbals don't require allowance.  And Taylor said that Buzz would have to be there in some capacity, not necessarily head coach....

chapman

I think promoting Williams is the "safe" strategy.  There's little doubt he can recruit, but we've seen nothing to indicate he can lead a program.  If Williams is promoted, we almost certainly keep all recruits with Nick Williams being the only question mark.  But what happens during the season, and in the future?  I'd rather have someone that's proven they can manage the program and Buzz is only a question mark.

Thomas' Danish Delight

Everyone SIGNED LOIs, no one's verbal except Erik Williams...correct?

And as far as Taylor not being Beasley...no poop, but who else are we gonna pick up as good as TT?  There are a few guys that still haven't committed but I forget who it was on here that gave a whole list of why we probably wouldn't want them...so I mean...balls man.

Just hope the smoke clears soon and at the end of the day, we're stronger than ever...gonna be hard, but it's not impossible.

PuertoRicanNightmare

Crean helped built a national champion at Michigan State. We pulled Buzz Williams off the garbage heap at New Orleans.

NavinRJohnson

I think everyone needs to realize and accept that there could be some short-term ramifications. Whomever they hire is going to come in with a shiney new 6-8 year contract and is not going to be overly concerned with next year or the year after. He will certainly try to convince the guys coming in to show up, and will likely be succesful with at least a couple of them. But, even if they all bolt, a new coach means a whole new pipeline of new recruits in addition to what may already be there if one or two assistants are retained.

That said, no matter what, assuming most already on the team come back, we'll be pretty damn good next year, but may have to rebuild some after that. We were going to have to do that anyway. I am not going to get too bent out of shape if one or two recruits decide to change their minds because of this. Its what happens after that matters. It would only hurt if those scholarships are not ultimatley used for someone as good or better.
