Crean tells TV station he wanted to be part of IU basketball

Written by: Emmett Prosser

In an interview with WTHR-TV of Indianapolis, former Marquette head coach Tom Crean stated one simple reason why he was trading in his Marquette blue and gold for Indiana crimson and cream.

"Because it’s Indiana basketball," Crean said.

"As a basketball coach, you understand that this is one of the greatest jobs in the country. It’s been for a long, long time."

I'm going to bed before I say something i'll regret later but he does have a bit of a point about IU basketball.  The thing that really irks me though is don't go crapping all over the MU program which made you who you are today.  Now he didn't say anything in the article negative about MU but it's about what he didn't say about MU and his time here.

Ah, the royal "We"

Maybe a step up from referring to yourself in the 3rd person, but not by much.

I actually thought he answered the questions correctly. He didn't need to reference us at all. And, he quick to point out that he didn't reach out to IU. That was a tough question.

Crean rejuvenated MU basketball and he took it where he could.  Time for him to go
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

I don't see what's offensive. Praising IU, which is what he did, is not the same as dissing Marquette, which is something he did not do.

rocky_warrior

Offensive?  Nothing in that clip.  It's just the situation as a whole that irks me.

As more info has come out over the past 8 hours, unless MU can get that "home run" hire, it seems we risk losing key recruits, possibly some players with tons of potential, and any chance of ending in the top half of the big east for the foreseeable future.

I sure hope I'm wrong.  But it doesn't seem Crean left Marquette with many choices.

"We understand you were so interested in this job that you reached out to Indiana?"

TC got a little flustered and said... "I wouldn't say that" when asked that... I wonder how it really went down.

he said it was a  "quick process" followed by saying it was a "tough afternoon and evening".  sounds like it was done fast and he didn't even give Marquette a choice!

My thoughts exactly Pete. He wasn't entirely straightforward with his response, there's something not quite right with this whole situation. It pisses me off too that he's been all over the Indiana news and hasn't said one damn thing to the Milwaukee press, players, administration, or MU family as a whole. It really cheapens everything he's said about his feelings toward Marquette. If you're going to dump us, do it with a little class. Without Marquette, there's no way he ever gets close to the Indiana job. I used to put up with Crean, I even defended him at times, but there is no excuse for this. This one hurts.

I agree reesie.  I like to think that I'd feel better if he came out and said something to those of us in Milwaukee and at Marquette.

I woke up today hoping that this was all just a bad dream.  I know I'm going to feel sick at 11am today...

what treally gets my goat is the way this unfolded. Our AD out of town.  Probably no chance for MU to discuss options with Crean.

I believe that Crean initiated the activity and MU was ambushed.

Kinda' reminds me of the way the Colts slunk off in the night when dumping Baltimore for Indy. Must be something to do with that state.  Certainly leaves a bad taste and is a hell of a way for a supposed "classy guy" to make a job change. A Pitino-like move.  Now we've got our own slick Rick.

I was thinking the same thing.
If TC has such high regard for MU, its tradition, the players/recruits, yada yada, this episode sure did not show it.

What do you want him to do?  Hold a Presser at the Union so everyone can boo and throw s**t at him?
The best you MIGHT get is a Homer interview in the next week or so.

TC has initiated contact with plenty of schools over the years.  only difference, he recieved an offer this year.

some of you seem to have bought into too many of his salesman lines over the years and took them to heart.

are you guys kidding me?...how can you continue to be this delusional?  Do you still beleive that Andy Katz reporting that Crean was putting his name out as
interested in the Illinois, OSU, and Indiana job the first time around was simply because Katz does not like MU.  This guy was gone as early as 2003 if illinois offered.

butchbadger

I don't blame MU fans for not wanting to hear it, but Crean put his name out there for every job. Not Katz or anyone else.  Illinois would have hired him but he asked for way too much and they were turned off.  He wanted out for a long time.

He doesn't care about Milwaukee, MU, his players...ANYONE, but himself.  You'll be better off with out him.

He actually turned down some offers that we have stated here in the past.  Arkansas was one of them.  Nothing new here guys.  O'Neill fished for jobs, Deane fished for jobs, the next guy will fish for jobs.   Welcome to any school not named UCLA, Duke, North Carolina and a handful of others.
