Indiana's standards are A LOT higher than ours here at Marquette.  people usually rank our seasons (on this board) as a "B" if we simply make the NCAAs.  anything Sweet 16 or later and it's heaven here.  and just being in the top 5/6/7 in the Big East standings is a huge success.... that's not Indiana

better be competing and winning Big Ten titles.  a Sweet 16 appearance in the minimum.  Indiana fans (i know them well) are like Kansas, Kentucky, UNC fans in expecting a Final Four each yr.

this could be tough for a coach that has only played in the 2nd weekend of the NCAAs once in 9yrs.

muPARTY

and remember, Mike Davis led IU to a NCAA Championship game and was canned a couple years later.

MUsoxfan

4 years until his tanned ass is canned after not meeting expectations.    Hopefully a few early exits from the NIT in there

79Warrior

he will finish his college career at IU.

4everwarriors

Consistently said he'll be a better coach at his next stop. Used us to learn on and make his mistakes. Then again, a lepard never changes his spots.

MUSF

He is taking this job at the best possible time.

Has IU ever reached a point lower than this. The expectations on Crean will be lower than any coach recent coach at IU and he has great room for improvement. You don't want to take a job with no room to move up. I think TC has the chance to be very successful and retire a Hoosier.

The biggest battle will be with the 4everwarriors types over at IU that will never let Knight go. There are a lot of them and I doubt they will care too much for TC's style.

Well, we'll soon learn if Tom Crean can't recruit big men...or Tom Crean couldn't recruit big men to Marquette. I'm going to take a guess and predict the latter.

Look at what he's done here. If I'm in the Big Ten, I'm not happy with this hire. Indiana is going to be a force in two years. He got A TON out of his talent, and the talent is about to take 3 steps up. I love Marquette to death, but he had some limitations here. That's not to say we can't continue as a major player in the Big East, but I much preferred our chances with Tom Crean at the helm. I said that in response to all of the doubters for years, and will continue to say it. That said, I'm hope I'm dead wrong and sincerely wish TC has been holding us back from much greener pastures all of these years.

recruiting against Bo wasn't easy, now he's gonna have a to recruit against former conference rival Brey @ ND and Big Ten rival Purdue and Matt Painter... all in state.  not to mention being bookended by Weber @ Illinois ands Matta @ Ohio State.  (Izzo and Bo aren't far away either!)

VegasWarrior77

Good point MUParty but look at who he was recruiting against in the Big East: Calhoun, Boehim, Pitino, Huggins, JT III, Dixon, Wright and the NY/NJ schools.  He's feast or famine at Indiana and assuming their scholarships get cut he may be in big trouble!

thats a great point. many people assume indiana gets whoever they want, which is in some cases true, but there are alot of good programs in the same state and conference.

also, all of a sudden the Big 10 is becoming stacked with coaches- the arrival of crean and tubby in 2 years, matta,painter,izzo,bo,weber- maybe its gonna improve from the crap it was this year

for us, this is terrible because not only is there tubby snagging up minnesota, but indiana is pretty much dead now

the more i think about this the more worried i become- we might need a miracle

i wasn't trying to discredit the Big East coaching crew, i was talking about proximity.  going into the Northeast was hard competition for talent.  but he had 4 conference schools (Cinci, MU, DePaul, ND) west of the Applachian Mountains (i'm counting Pitt as east) to compete with.

now he goes to the Big Ten where: he has 5 rival schools in 3 bordering states, an in state rival, and his former territory (Wisconsin) already contains a conference/recruiting rival

Daniel

He'll be at Indiana as long as they are winning, or until Michigan State opens up , whichever comes first.

MUCHI814

He's gonna have his work cut out for him, however Indiana at some point will have to give some leniency in order to stop the coaching carousel at IU, which is fortunate for TC.  However, Indiana fans still always appear to be some of the most disillusioned fans in all of sports.  I see Crean having it really tought for 2-3 years, after all he is losing 5 of the 6 leading scorers/rebounders.  Being mediocre for about 2 more years and then out the door.  The rise of Butler, Notre Dame, and especially Purdue the way they look, will kill Crean.  Unfortunately it seems that most Coaches after fired from big time programs fall and they fall hard.  I Wouldn't be surprised to see Crean looking back in 5-6 years from now wishing he had just stuck it out at Marquette and on his way to being the next Al McGuire with a great, consistent program.

he'd be a pariah at IU faster than he is now at Marquette.  leaving for a conference rival and championship contender?  good lucking making it out of Assembly Hall alive if that ever did happen.

also, most agree MSU is a step down in program status from IU.

MUDPT

Crean has no recruiting ties to Indiana.  He had James and Krunti Hester.  He sent absolutely no correspondence (letter, phone call, talk to him at a tournament, etc.) to Rob Hummel, who is at Purdue and will be the next three years.

I know Tom likes his tanning booths, but he will never be tan enough to have the strike against him that Davis did with IU's fan base.

muPARTY

i think struggle yr one, Sweet 16 yr two, NCAA first round yr 3, NIT first round 4, NIT first round year five, head coach at Ball State or Eastern Michigan year six

muchalktalk

He helped recruit Final Four teams at MSU and MU.  I think you will be amazed at the doors Indiana will open up for him.  Could you imagine if our guard-attack offense would have had an Eric Gordon type.

You need to follow the game closer before you make such ridiculous comments.

MUsoxfan

I think he'll do above average.   I hope he ends up being total garbage

ErickJD08

I think there is a good chance Crean doesn't last long at IU and if things are bad at MU, Crean coming back.  Sounds silly but unless Marquette gets an absolute gem in a coach, we will need another coach in 5 years, about the same amount of time I personally think Crean will last.  I would hate to take him back but I think the options would be limited for both parties in 5 years.

Along with this topic, I sadly think that the chances of success are slightly better for Crean at IU than most coaches at MU.

I'm just unsure whether or not he "Rich Rodriguez'd" himself out of town.  I guess it all depends on who we hire and how good of a job he does, but Crean burned many bridges today.    I know for a fact that if I saw Crean on the street today that I'd make him fully aware of what a colossal pretty boy he is.

jutaw22mu

tan tommy will  last until he gets cancer from all that fake baking.

muPARTY

it's going to be a shock to the system when he finds out that not making it through the first weekend of the NCAAs at Indiana is the same as if you didn't make the tournament.
