We may not be happy that he left Marquett, but lets not act like he did nothing for Marquette.  People seem to forget that MU was nothing before he got here.  We were just another small school program that grew old and stale.  He brought us back and got us into a great conference.  He did a lot for Marquette.  I know people are upset, but it is stupid to bash him for being a poor coach.

You're an uninformed fan and it's people like you who have been drinking the snake oil since Crean got here. The guy has been given more resources since 2003 than almost any coach in the country and has delivered exactly what? I am glad to be rid of him.

Detfan23

So I am an uninformed fan because I realize that Crean brought us out of the dark ages?  Notice I never said that he was this great coach, but he did do a lot.  I am sorry that my thoughts are not the same as the great PRN.  I promise to work on that during the offseason.

What dark ages? Dukiet was gone for 8 years when Crean got here! If you ask me, we're about to enter the dawning of a golden age!

Yeah, things definitely were on the upswing during the Mike Deane era. I mean, the recruiting class of Krunti Hester and ... Krunti Hester really had MU heading in the right direction.

Talk about uninformed ...

Crean did a very good job at MU. He will do very well @ IU. MU is just a tough sell for any coach today. Jesuit, Urban, Milwaukee. Not for everyone, TC did a good job in spite of it.

Rationally speaking, I think everyone realizes that it's ok for an employee to move on to a different employer.

However, I think it's ok for people to be upset at Crean for leaving.  We cared about him, defended him, and bought into what he created.

dont bash him, im sure joanie made the final decision

I liked Crean, sorry to see him go.  I'm upset with him right now as I think he's leaving a very good team behind and it might be awhile before he's able to set a foundation from which to build at Indiana.

That said, its ridiculous to say MU was nothing before Crean.  O'Neill resurrected the program after Dukiet and Deane had a couple of good years (100+ wins in 5 yrs).  What fans should always be thankful for is Cords had the foresight to get rid of Deane before he brought us back down and he made a great hire in Crean.  Crean advanced the program - no doubt - but the program was never in as bad a shape as some Crean backers have tried to portray it.  The key now is to hire a coach who can sustain what Crean brought in and further advance it.

Its always a crossroads when a coach leaves.  Needless to say this is an important hire for MU.  Let's hope Marquette gets it right.

MU made Crean...Crean did not make MU

It was a mutually beneficial relationship.
Marquette basketball very likely isn't where it is today without Tom Crean.
Tom Crean very likely isn't where he is today without Marquette University.

Crean did a lot for MU.  Now let's go out and get someone even better.

Crean was at the right place at the right time, he was a good coach and got lucky with a Final Four Team,(and yes I would consider that pretty lucky), and had tournament teams before and after that.  I would argue that he underachieved with this recruiting class regardless of previous Marquette standards.  The program will go on after him and will continue to succeed after him.  I'm not a strong Crean backer, and don't think right now he is a great coach, but I did like the idea of him sticking around for awhile and turning into great coach and having his name synonymous with Marquette basketball.  That seems to be the ticket these days in developing a perennial power. But all in all it is a blow to the program, whether you like him or not.

Niv Berkowitz

Stop with all the 'Crean got lucky' stuff.

Do any of you - especially PRN - realize that we aren't in CUSA anymore because of him? That we are in the Big East? That we have a dozen games televised every year, which is a boon to the program AND the school from a marketing/advertising tool? Do you realize that applications to enter MU went up while he was around, most likely due to the improved/increased image of the school?

Love him or hate him, Crean did what every coach should strive to do - leave the program in better shape than it was in when he got here, and Crean certainly did that and then some.

We have the Al now, are part of the toughest conference in all of hoops, and have a nationally ranked team annually. I don't know what more the guy had to do, other than get a big man to make everyone happy.

All these people that hated Crean, though, and say he can't recruit...it's too bad you won't be able to keep cheering for this team for a few more years...you know, since all these kids are Crean recruits so they must suck.

I mean, they don't even compare to the athletically gifted squads of the Deane era.

This is a true sign of the apocolypse.  PRN making positive statements about the Gold.
