I love how they give him credit for chalmers whose dad is also an assistant at Kansas

BRING BACK TODD TOWNSEND!

ok kidding, but anyone think kowalczyk could be an option.  I think it's a terrible option, personally, but I bet the name comes up...

OHPanther

Sean Miller would be a good transition, but if anything happens to Dixon, Miller's ties to Pitt are strong.

Mark Few? No ties to recruiting in the Midwest but a great coach....BE would be a nice step up and would empower him to reach the next level.

Sean Sutton may be the closest thing to TC when he was hired.

....I wonder if Coach Crean woke up today and said, "What was I thinking?" I can't believe that he is leaving the MU family.

Chalmers was recruited and committed to Kansas before his father was hired as KU's director of basketball operations in June 2005.  His freshman year was 05-06.

everyone that talks/interviews b knight all come out saying ,they dont think he's done coaching...we can give good $$, top of the line facilities and relative control..(new a.d..) all things he had at iu and not at texas tech

lowry of siu...martelli of st joes seem to b the most realistic fit..i think they would b able to recruit the best from the time they were hired 3 yrs down the road..

as an outsider... i seen it on here before but the hurley that coached t taylor ...that h.s. has won 25 new jersey state championships im not sure on the numbers but id say he has most of them..maybe he is looking to make a jump to the college game and uses t taylor as bait? i did notice the "we" in talking about possible dismissal from letter of intent??

Count me in for the Bilas idea.  Instant credibility, high national profile, brilliant, energetic and without an AARP card.

NavinRJohnson

I'm not married to the idea as he has not been wildly succesful, but I have to admit I'm kinda feelin' Brian Gregory. His progression at Dayton has been similar to Crean's...some early success, followed by a couple down years, but they are back on the upswing. Beyond that I think his experience makes him somewhat of a natural fit...he has worked for Jud Heathcoat, Kevin O'Neill, and Tom Izzo...my hope would be that he could sort of bring the best of what O'Neill, Dean, and Crean gave us given that history. Safe to assume he will bring a defensive mentality (all 3), good knowledge of X's and O's matchups(heathcoat/Deane), tireless work and recruiting (Izzo/Crean), etc. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Guys like Miller, Pearl, Bennett, etc. would certainly bring a better resume, and perhaps be safer picks, but I'm not sure I guy like Gregory wouldn't be a better fit (who am I kidding, Bennett is a natural fit, and I'd be ok with that). The question would be if he could translate the upgrade in conference, recent success, etc. into more success for MU on the court. I would suggest if he can recruit to Dayton, he can rtecruit to MU. Its all relative. I would suggest that the jump from Dayton to MU is comparable to the jump from MU to IU. That said, if Crean doesn't ultimately deliver better results there than he did here, he will be out on his a**. If IU is assuming Crean can upgrade his success by making the move, isn't is safe to assume Gregory might be able to do the same by upgrading to MU?

Larry Eustachy or Isiah Thomas?  :D

Other dark horse contenders I'd like to see considered...
Matt Painter (Purdue)
Danny Manning (KU Assistant)
Keno Davis (Drake)
Sean Sutton (unemployed)

Bull's coach Jim Boylan has been mentioned in the media.. he was even asked about it... interesting.. and not sure if in a good or bad way.

:P

If MU wants to hire a former Bulls head coach (and Boylan will be that in a few weeks), then Skiles should be the man. No idea if the guy can recruit, but his task master approach probably would play better with college kids than it has in the NBA.
The downside of him, though, would be that he'd probably bail at the first opportunity for another gig in the pros.

How about Jay Bilas...Guy knows his stuff and runs one of the best summer camps every year, not to mention a small stint as a Duke asst. I know its not very practical, but can you imagine him as our coach. Interesting. Sink your teeth into it. Besides he's the one analyst who actually knows what he's talking about. I think he would make a decent coach, and would give us the name splash we so desire.

Since we're diving into the media world, I'm fascinated by the idea of Jim McIlvaine.  Sure, he's of a "different" caliber, but J Mac loves his MU BBall and knows a thing or 2 about the game (and just as importantly, people).  Odds are someone a bit more seasoned will get the job.

all reports say that Crean was the 3rd choice behind Tony Bennet (said "no thankyou") and Sean Miller (contract buy out way too high).  That being said, I guess we can eliminate them from our lists.

BrewCity83

Not so fast.  The MU job is a lot more attractive to some people in a lot of ways than the IU job.

New Short List - 1 Name

John Calipari from Memphis.

Get him into the Big East - most of his high talent is gone, Rose jets for the NBA, along with Douglas-Roberts and Dorsey.  We have more positives to offer a head coach than most programs out there, we should roll the dice and try to land a whale.

Get Calipari to visit the campus, show him the Al McGuire Center - show him a map of how close we are to Chicago (Recruiting) :) and I think we could consider him a prospect.

So what if he's got a long tenure with Memphis - Crean had the same thing.  I think Cottingham put it well in the Press Conference - if you have a great coach, you have to be prepared to lose him.

"Calipari doesn't want to go to Milwaukee...." - That's BS.  Who would rather go to Memphis?  They're both pretty similar in caliber.

Who's more likely to follow their Coach to a new program?  Crean's crew or Calipari's studs?  Again, I think Calipari.

Also, Calipari is an East Coaster - I think he'd love to be in the Big East and compete against the Coast.

HELL NO!! Calipari is not the fit for this program. he does NOT graduate players which is one thing that Cottingham outlined in the press conference.  He wants someone who will keep our student athletes graduating.

When your players are good enough to go Pro after their 1st or 2nd year, of course Graduating % is going to dwindle.
