I was wondering around the Internet and found this post from College Hoops Journal.

http://www.collegehoopsjournal.com/2008/03/22/stanford-marquette-video-highlights/

Apparently, he made some inappropriate gesture to the Stanford fans.  Chicos can you confirm that they were sitting across from the MU bench?  I couldn't get a good view of it, so did anybody else see this?

ben8787

If I'm watching what I should, I saw Matthews make a "stand up" gesture.  Nothing wrong with that.

Plus, he is gesturing at Marquette fans (directly across from the MU bench).

Maybe I'm missing something.  ?-(

Thomas' Danish Delight

Yeah, Wes is too classy to be making any inappropriate gestures like that.

It looked more like a thumbs up if anything, it's hard to tell with the pixelation and what not.

MarquetteFan94

definitely waving for the fans to get up....pretty easy to decipher...

Absolutely right. I remember that happening and getting excited that he was pumping up the Marquette fans in the crowd.

He was clearly gesturing to the Marquette section, you could see all the gold shirts in that corner of the court all game.
"Marquette is bigger than any one person. Marquette is Marquette."

chapman

All you need is a good paused still to see his hand waving for the crowd to get up, not his finger waving to tell Stanford fans to shut up.  Whoever posted that is an idiot.

77ncaachamps

The Marquette yellowshirts in the lower level were directly across the court from the MU bench. Clearly, the camera gets a shot of the MU faithful then shows Wes. If you see where Wes turns to the crowd then back towards the MU bench, the location of both validate that he was giving them a "thumbs up" or "pointing to his mom or the crowd."

MUDPT

I just sent the guy an e-mail.  I'll keep everyone updated.

MUDPT

Got this e-mail back this morning:

Firstly, thanks for reading and checking out the site; I always appreciate
feedback and want to know if I misstep at all.

Secondly, as I was watching the live feed and even when I checked
afterwards ... CBS blurs out his hand when he lifts it up.

I'll make mention of an edit for sure and say that Marquette fans were on
that side of the arena, but Matthews definitely flipped the bird.

-Matt

TallTitan34

Why would Matthews give MU fans the bird.  He is sadly mistaken.

NavinRJohnson

Oh great, another bird flipping legend...Much like Mike Deane never having flipped off the Louisville crowd that is treated as fact in UL circles. I remember that during the game - absolutley nothing wrong with it. This Matt guy = kook!

Wow...this guy needs glasses....let him think what he wants and stir up some "controversy"...what an idiot.

Is this guy serious? He's an idiot! Wes is way too classy to flip off the Stanford crowd and if he really thinks Wes flipped off his own fans, then he has no business in his field.

Well if "Matt" wants a photograph from my seat that shows exactly how the layout was, I'm happy to send it.  MU fans were across from the MU bench.  Stanford fans were BEHIND their bench.  So if Wes, who just about everyone knows is as classy as they come, was giving Stanford fans the bird, it would be with his OTHER hand and the OTHER end of the court.  Matt is hugely mistaken on all fronts, including the fact that Matthews has never done this in the past and nothing in him to suggest he would start now.  The guy is just wrong....flat out wrong.  I was there, as were many others on this board...he was signalling directly to the MU fans and looked our way.

I just sent him an email as well...he's absolutely wrong on this.

It may not have happened, but they definitely deserve it - EVERY GAME!  ;)
