Season notes


High point    Two days after blowing a big lead in a 72-68 loss at Arizona State, the Cardinal held off a frantic comeback by Arizona to post a 67-66 win in Tucson.
Lowlight    After an uneventful 4-0 start to the season, the Cardinal shot 37 percent and lost by 12 on the road to Siena, the same school that knocked Stanford out of the 1989 NCAA tournament.
Most Revealing Moment    In just his second game back after being academically ineligible in the fall, Brook Lopez scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, leading the Cardinal to a 62-61 road win over Texas Tech.
Did You Know?    Twins Robin and Brook Lopez have blocked 225 shots between them in their first two seasons.

Scouting report
Offensive Preference    The Cardinal are satisfied to play at a sedate pace and funnel the ball inside to the Lopezes. At their best, when the perimeter players are connecting, this can be a dangerous team.
Defensive Philosophy    This is Stanford's staple. They are ferocious rebounders, block nearly six shots a game, and pressure out front because the Lopez twins guard the basket so effectively against penetrators.
Secret Strength    The Cardinal have become much more efficient offensively. A year after averaging nearly 15 turnovers per game, that number is now under 13. They understand their strengths and play to them.
Achilles' Heel    Stanford is not a particularly good foul-shooting team. Three of the five starters, including point guard Johnson, convert under 65 percent.
Will Lose When ...    The ball isn't going in the basket. Stanford shot a combined 40.8 percent from the field and just 29.6 percent from the arc in its first four regular-season defeats.
Famous Last Words    The Cardinal play consistently tough defense and the Lopez twins are huge and productive. Stanford was ousted in the first round by Louisville a year ago after coughing up 21 turnovers. We'll soon find out if they have made sufficient progress in taking care of the ball to advance.
