Danielle Kamm added 13 points, and Jasmine McCullough and Christina Quaye each chipped in 10, as all 10 players in the game for Marquette scored five or more points in the game.
"I was pleased with our results tonight," said head coach Terri Mitchell. "We tired to work more on getting our sets in while pushing fast up the court and did a fairly good job."
Marquette began the game on a 19-0 run, holding Viterbo scoreless through the first 5:59. Not only were the Golden Eagles solid offensively, hitting nine of their first 14 shots from the field, but their defense was tough as well, holding the V-Hawks to two field goals on 11 attempts in the first 8:01. MU would lead by as many as 34 in the first half before going into the locker room with a 51-19 advantage.
The Golden Eagles came out in the second half on a 15-6 run, increasing their lead to 66-25 on a jumper by Svetlana Kovalenko. With 2:36 remaining, Marquette increased its lead to 57 at 93-36 on a put-back by Efueko Osagie-Landry, the largest of the evening, before Viterbo scored the final four points of the game.
MU finished the contest shooting 55.1 percent (38-for-39) and was two-for-nine from beyond the ark. The team hit 75.0 percent of its shots from the charity stripe as Kamm went a perfect five-for-five and Ellis six-for-six. The Golden Eagles were dominant on the boards, grabbing 47 to the V-Hawks 24. Even more impressive, Marquette tallied 18 offensive rebounds while Viterbo managed 15 defensively.
"The biggest things we learned in this game are that we need to work more on the defensive end, jumping to the ball, stopping dribble penetration and closing out," said Mitchell. "We also need to work the ball inside more, get the post more touches. When we did that, we produced."
Quaye led the squad with eight rebounds and Ellis tallied a game-high five assists. Freshman Janelle Harris was three-for-six from the field in her first game as a Golden Eagle, tallying seven points in 17 minutes.
"It was our first experience with officials this season and we worked extremely well when we wanted to run," added Mitchell. "We took baby steps today and will continue to improve."
The Golden Eagles are back in action, Nov. 6, when they host Wis.-Parkside in an exhibition game at 7 p.m.
