I know people keep saying don't get worked up about the ranking but it's a bit of a bummer to see us in the 90s from the most casually referenced ranking when we were in the mid 70s when I was going there.

All I can say is, don't get worked up about the ranking.

They are multiple factors that go into these that do not drive the quality of the undergraduate education. But more importantly, I don't think a lot of students reference them and I know "professional" college advisors do not use them.

There are kind of like NFL power rankings. No impact on making the playoffs.

The thing that I always remember about this list and is increasingly relevant each year is that US News rankings are reflective of a school's entire academic profile and offerings (including post grad programs and research) and that hurts schools with a focus on undergrad education.  You see more and more "big" schools that you never thought of as elite or top level schools rise in these rankings each year.

I went to Miami U for undergrad.  It was in the mid 50s when I graduated in 2008.  Since I graduated, they added a huge new (and mega funded) building for the undergrad business school, demolished 2-3 other academic buildings that were replaced with updated versions with new facilities and resources, and expanded a bunch of other program offerings.  Freshman class metrics have remained constant (or improved) and the student profile hasn't changed much.  Still fantastic grad school placements, job network connections, etc...  One of my good friends worked in admissions/administration until recently and he said they didn't have any issues with recruitment, targeted students, etc... But Miami doesn't have a graduate business school.  It isn't a heavily funded research university, limited grad programs, sits heavily in the shadow of Ohio State for that kind of stuff.  This year Miami is ranked...143.  Which seems terrible and a bummer/pride thing, but the diploma isn't any less valuable or more negatively/pessimistically viewed, so YMMV.

Yeah I don't think of my degree at MU as worth any less. I just enjoyed the pride of "top 75" when I was younger, 80s just seemed like random fluctuations but 90 feels like barely in. For context I was offered almost a full ride to UIC (my old safety school) which is now 95. Yeah as someone who enjoys a bit of pride over his Alma mater there's a bit of disappointment that we're essentially in the same tier as my old safety school (even if the rankings are truly worthless or skewed by graduate degree programs)

90th is in the top 2.5% of all US colleges and universities.  75th is top 2%.

Not a big deal.

GOO

If i were judging based on these lists,  for undergrad, I'd look the the following ranking first. Marquette is usually ranked high, but I note it fell to 25 for 2027. Still highly ranked and elite.

A home win in basketball is Q1 if it's against NET 1-30 #31 is in the top 8.5% #30 is 8.2%. But it sure feels better to say we have another Q1 win. Again I agree it's not a huge deal, but it's just a bummer. I mean imagine if we swung #15 spots up instead of down. That #60 would be plastered everywhere, like when the WSJ put us #55 and I'd guarantee it'd be used as a highlight for fundraising.

Small nitpick. There are schools in the national liberal arts college category that would be ranked well ahead of Marquette if there was only one large pool. Also, I believe you are putting two year schools in the same pot when you are talking about those percentages.

But your overall point is accurate. Marquette is a very good four year school. The only one ranked higher in the BE is Georgetown.

Apparently we are ranked very highly for job placement within 6 months of graduation.

Which makes a ton of sense with business, engineering and nursing.

Dammit. I forgot about them. OK...there are only two ranked higher.

That's a relief. Nova's football might actually upgrade the ACC.  ;D

FWIW, when my daughters and their friends were looking at schools, I don't remember any of them referring to the USNWR rankings.

It's mostly an alumni point of pride thing.

MU tied with Baylor, TCU and Gonzaga is pretty good company to keep.

Is the Princeton review still around? I remember those were the rankings when I was in high school (2006) applying to colleges and MU was low 70s.

I agree with Galway that 70s "sounds" a lot better than 90 but I know it's not a big deal and there's probably 0.0001% chance I ever have to use this info in a conversation

I'd rather be top 10 again in hoops

I only have data going back to 2006, but in those 22 years, we've only been in the top 75 twice, #75 in 2011 and #75 in 2014. We were also #77 in 2009 and #76 in 2015. Other than those four we've always been between #81 and #90. Agreed that it would be nice to be higher, but we've pretty consistently been in this range. This year is tied for the lowest rank in the past 22 years.

Princeton Review is still a thing. From what I can tell, they don't do true rankings anymore, but instead list the best 329 universities and provide information on each. So we are ranked somewhere between 1 and 329!

We were #85 in 2006. I don't have data before that, maybe we were lower in 2005.

Caveat I used AI for pulling the rankings but if I take a look at the rankings history in that timeframe (2005 edition for 2006 school year to present) we fall 10 spots from 76 in 2015 to 86 in 2016 we've been 83-90 this past decade 75-84 the prior decade. I feel like it's fair to at least acknowledge a legitimate drop not a similar range.

Ultimately does it matter? Not really, we aren't in that tier with truly elite universities (sans a couple programs) and we're still a well regarded quality institution but again it's just something that's a bummer to see.
