It is entirely possible that he told MU of his intentions only 3 hours before the end of the window to move freely.  That means nothing in relation to what happens now or whether more players come to MU.  Players who put their names in the portal in that window can now make their decisions at their convenience.

Yes, it's completely straightforward that it was primarily money.  If it was role, he would have entered the portal as soon as he was informed that Shaka was recruiting a starting 5.  And he was absolutely aware of that.

This interview/season preview with Shertz is interesting.  Sheek doesn't seem to be penciled in as the starter and looks to have at least one if not 2 players ahead of him at the center position.  Not sure how much money he was offered - if it was more than the other centers - or if we couldn't match - perhaps once he reneged on his accepting Marquette offer that was it..  At any rate being a back up does not seem to be the major issue...
