Quote from: Hards Alumni on April 24, 2026, 09:18:50 AMNATO is a defensive alliance.  That is all that any of those countries should have said when Trump asked for help (that he didn't need, he says).  On the topic of getting us out of this mess.  He can't.  If he abandons the project (he should do this) he will have to answer what the point of the entire quagmire was.  There is no good answer to this question.  Israel forced him to do it, and enough people in the administration have wanted to go after Iran for decades, so they just YOLOed it.  There was/is no plan.  The only concept of a plan was to try to be a global bully, and that hasn't worked.  Iran punched back far harder than anyone in the Trump admin expected and now he's stuck.  Dropping more bombs or ruining Iran's infrastructure doesn't achieve any goals other than collective punishment of the civilian population.  Iran will still be able to launch drones, lay mines in the straight of Hormuz, and generally cause global financial chaos no matter how much ordinance the US military drops.  It was a fools errand from the start.  Trump likely thought he could get the same easy W in Iran that he got in Venezuela, and I absolutely believe that Bibi convinced him of this when they decided to start operation Epstein Fury.

Peter Hegseth and people like him should never be anywhere near serious government.  He was never ranked higher than a Major in the Army.  He had no previous Department of Defense experience either.  Meaning, he has no unnatural carnal knowledgeing clue what he is doing.  But he kissed ass, acted macho, and is a fool, so of course he should be The Secretary of Defense... I'm sorry, Secretary of War.  There has never been another person less qualified to hold this position, but that's nothing new to the Trump administration.

Uhm, Administrative Assistant of War.  Don't call our very macho and tough Lead War guy a Secretary.

Not only did he end the Vietnam war, he also ended the French war with Vietnam.

Agree with everything here except "Israel forced him to do it."

As you said later, Bibi "convinced" him; that's more accurate IMHO. There was no gun at Capt. Bone Spur's head. He had a choice, it was his decision and his alone, and he made a terrible one. And now, as you said, there are no good solutions for him politically.

Oh, so you think that Israel doesn't have dirt on Trump?

You're crazy.

Yes?  I think there are probably a few things he would prefer not out there.

Do I think his party would abandon him?  Absolutely not.

Until I am presented with evidence that he was "forced" (rather than "convinced") to go to war with Iran, I'm sticking with him simply having made yet another in an endless series of horrible decisions.

Going to take a lot of work to fix the mess this administration is making with our allies

According to Kelly, Trump said he was going to leave NATO in his 2nd term--thus Rubio getting a bill passed that it would require Congressional approval. So it seems Trump is trying to get the US kicked out as a workaround, all to please his master Putin.

I agree that is what he should do. Americans have the attention span of gnats and there will be 150 other scandals between now and the mid-terms that will make people forget about the conflict.

NO ONE in this administration was chosen for their competence. Like everyone else, Kegstand was chosen for his exquisite ability to kiss Trump's ass and because Trump thought he looked good on TV.

The fact that we keep trying to send incompetent businessmen to handle state business is a disgrace.

Scoop is as qualified to Witkoff and Kushner to lead such negotiations.

Both would likely be broke today if it wasn't for financing/investments secured to elicit political favors.

American military bases and other equipment in the Persian Gulf region suffered extensive damage from Iranian strikes that is far worse than publicly acknowledged and is expected to cost billions of dollars to repair, according to three U.S. officials, two congressional aides and another person familiar with the damage.
