Quote from: Pakuni on June 22, 2026, 11:14:24 AMCan't imagine there's much of anything about coaching in the pros that isn't better than coaching in college these days.

Yup. Leaving for UNC made absolutely no sense, and it wasn't the least bit surprising he told them to take a hike.

But an NBA job like this ... that's the ticket. He'll get paid big, he no longer has to beg 17-20 year olds to play college ball or to pretend to go to class, and he's already got some good players in Dallas.

Smart move.

And he can to go Duke when Brad Stevens leaves.

He'll have to fight Jay Wright for it!

The fact that Michigan literally put together the best portal team ever, and won the national title, seems like a good enough reason to stick around for a few more years.

Rodney Terry at Texas 2.0

No better way to fail upwards in college than be a failed HC, get a lead assistant job at a good program, and then get promoted to interim when the coach leaves (not fired).  As long as you have a good first season with the stacked roster they left behind, you back into a few years despite not having a resume that would even get you an interview in an open search.  The mystique of continuity

A program with a GM and that is up to speed with the landscape modern college athletics would never let a high level transfer who commits to their program (3x, apparently) get away because of an agent.

Buzz Williams at Marquette?

Quote from: TallTitan34 on June 22, 2026, 03:01:18 PMUnless they pull Sheek's $2M, I don't see why he would want to return even with a coaching change.

^This. Despite BeeJay's idiotic schtick, Sheek left for a stack of cash, not a lack of playing time

maybe I'm reading too much into it, but this doesn't sounds like UM plans to go into the season with Boynton as the head coach:

I can see your point of view, but it also sounds like the wording for being a full year interim head coach. Seem to make sense not to sign him to a HC contract for 1 year.

One team does this every desperate to not have guys transfer away.

Quote from: mug644 on June 23, 2026, 10:20:25 AMBuzz Williams at Marquette?

I dont need to white knight for Buzz, but he had a single season at a small school that was a disaster, even without factoring in the issues in NOLA the year before, in his early 30s.

Rodney Terry had barely a .500 record in a decade as a HC at 2 schools before he got the promotion following Beard's situation.

Boyton was 25 games under .500 in 7 seasons at a big program despite having tons of talent including a #1 pick.

Buzz was a wild outside the box hire beyond his credentials at the time, make no mistake on that.  But I don't really look at it as failing upwards into major job like the other 2.

Marquette hired Buzz to be the head coach in the normal timeframe that colleges hire new coaches.

He wasn't an in-season replacement, like Terry.  He wasn't promoted in the summer, like Boyton.

Apples and oranges.

Buzz also wasn't hired as an interim and got the job after others turned us down.

If I recall correctly, we went after Sean Miller who turned us town. Was there anyone else? I can't remember the other names that were floating around

I think there is a Bennett anecdote in there somewhere.

Said no, changed his mind, called back, too late because Buzz had said yes?   Ish?

You are correct. He turned us down and a group of alumni (led by Marc Marotta) got on a plane to Pullman to get him to change his mind. By the time he did, Buzz had accepted the job.
