Last year, Seton Hall was 7 - 25, Holloway stayed as the head coach, and brought in 11 new portal players.

This year, they are 14-3 (BE: 4-2) and ranked #25 this week.
----
The reputation of MU is much better than that of Seton Hall.
Shaka's reputation is much better than Holloway's.
And whatever the Hall has in NIL money, I have to believe MU has significantly more.

If Shaka wants, he can reload this team into a force next year. The best-rated portal players will take Shaka seriously.

But this pivot requires Shaka to abandon some of his principles and show some players the door, and potentially take portal seniors, if not graduate students. (he wants younger players to develop)

----

At this point, it is about the rest of Shaka's career. If he refuses, no other high major is hiring him unless he uses the portal.  So, just start doing it at MU.

He makes over $2m/year. If he really does not want to use the portal, he can go coach Northern Illinois or UNC Asheville for $400k/year. Recruit high school seniors. And when they have a decent freshman year, they jump into the portal and go to ... MU (which is exactly what Kolek did). Does he want to trade what he has now for that?

Otherwise, he retires and makes a go at being an announcer.
He's 48. Is he ready to hang it up?

======

I don't like the portal, and what it has done to basketball any more than Shaka does. But, to quote the Movie Godfather, "this is the business we have chosen."

Seton Hall won't be ranked after losing at home today to Butler, 77-66. But, yes, Shaka does need to use the portal for a couple solid players come portal time on 4/7. Some very nice talent redshirting and coming in, but they all will be freshmen eligibility-wise.

Wow! Thank You Awesome information! And yes Seton Hall will drop after losing to Butler at home today but what a dramatic turn around!
For Marquette feel 3 Portal players minimum will help turn us around next year or you might see something similar to this again next year.

...not just portal players but players that can shoot beyond and inside the arc, make layups/dunks after an offensive rebound, play defense and of course spend the money to get them so they don't have to take a bribe from a bookie to earn some extra dough.

My Equibase Chart comments:
Pre-race, Marquette broke through the gate, after being keyed up post-parade. Reloaded by the assistant starter. Dwelt gate, then reared, throwing bug boy jockey Zaide Lowery, continued riderless for a 1/16 of a mile, collared by outrider, where talented jockey Nigel James then got a leg up, steadied several times in traffic, on the wrong lead the entire clubhouse turn, climbing exiting the turn, remained on wrong lead through the homestretch, greenly. Rank much of backstretch. Briefly got alongside brilliant pacesetter Villanova, was game against that rival for 1/8 Mile, before being overtaken, bumped repeatedly by the bigger Chestnut gelding St John's, while Marquette lugged in badly mid-stretch. Briefly overtook the tiring Blue Demon, only to get passed by that rival at the wire. Pulled up nearing wire, eased. Vanned off post race.
Trainer commented: draw a line through this troubled 2025-26 Futurity.

Bad roster construction. Brutal coaching. Crappy fans.

The portal is NOT closed.

Add a veteran elite center who can defend the rim, and MU is a sweet 16 team next year.

If MU has money to compete, there is no reason not to add a couple of key portal players.   This is business. And people make different kinds of money in the world based on perceived value then performance.     These guys want to get paid more, play and get better.   They are in business now.  Nothing wrong with bringing in someone who makes more than a current player.     We can do this right.  And lots can be happy.

Ya, it seems like a recruiting strategy of "you come, and we give you the opportunity to earn big money" is reasonable - and I understand is what happened with TKO and Kam - they got paid significantly more than the other guys right?

This "we pay you (more) because you stuck around (because you don't have any other options because you're not that good)" isn't RGV - it's charity. With the roster slots we have you could presumably carry them if they didn't want to transfer out somewhere and still get (less) money -that would still let them get a free education and honor your commitment there, but pay should 100% be based on performance - like everywhere else in the real world.

The announcer thing might be attractive to him if he cannot cut big time bb.

Shaka is likely pullin' down a lot more than $2M per. He's not unloading a bunch of guys. Hopefully the Lowrey spot is used on an impactful portal guy. Maybe Cody Hatt drops heavy. SH finishing top half in-conference is probably a reflection the conf is not very good, btw. IF Shaka leaves MU, voluntarily or involuntarily, I can foresee him coaching out at a MAC school. He might get RGV admin buy-in at that level. And hey, MAC schools are free of Scoop-like scrutiny and win pressure!
