LIV Golf's future appears to be increasingly doubtful. Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, which said in April that it would stop funding the upstart professional golf tournament, has reportedly only provided a third of the $600 million it had committed for this year, according to The Financial Times, citing a financial filing and unnamed sources. A funding shortfall adds pressure on LIV officials to find new investors to avoid financial collapse.

Not terribly surprising to find out that Phil Mickelson is kind of a dick.

Phil Mickelson, once one of America's most popular and notable athletes, has been accused of inappropriate conduct at a San Diego area golf club, and has been removed from the club, according to a report in Golf Digest.

Mickelson is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club near San Diego, according to Golf Digest, after an alleged incident this past spring. A female employee accused Mickelson of, in Golf Digest's words, "nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact" prior to a round. The employee reported the incident to supervisors, according to the report, and club officials confronted Mickelson in the middle of his golf round. He was asked to leave and departed the club before finishing his round, per the report.

The Farms provided a statement to Golf Digest that included the following: "Following a staff member report of member misconduct, the Club provided immediate and ongoing support to the staff member, conducted a thorough independent investigation of the incident and took decisive action. This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club." Multiple Golf Digest sources indicated that the "individual" was Mickelson.

This week's U.S. Open will be the fifth it has hosted since 1900, and of the 520 different golfers who have competed in the first four, just three have ended the week under par: Retief Goosen (-4 in 2004), Phil Mickelson (-2 in 2004) and Ray Floyd (-1 in 1986). Brooks Koepka won in 2018 at +1 and Corey Pavin won in 1995 at even par.

Shinnecock has widened their fairways this week, compared to previous Opens.  Hitting it sideways will be more penal than ever.  If the wind blows, over par wins it again.  If rain softens the course and the wind stays down, -5.

Course played surprisingly easy with that wind howling.

Fairways are a mile wide, and there were relatively few horrific fescue escapades. Xander had one. Reed hit a shot sideways out of it.
