They want to be Penn State's rival in football and Penn State doesn't care.  They have no basketball rivals anymore nor will they.

They've been called a "sleeping giant" in football because of the Under Armour money and talent near them.  The talent near them can get paid anywhere.  One of Mike Locksley's selling points as coach was recruiting.  Doesn't matter.

Neither Rutgers or them will ever be good at football. It was a mistake that the SEC knew and the B10 didn't. Don't water down the brand. The four Pac schools made sense in every way but geography. Just like it made sense for the SEC to take UT, OU, A&M...and to a lesser degree Missouri.

But Rutgers and Maryland are just not the same as the big land-grant schools of the midwest. Penn State is a little outside that realm as well, but at least they have a history and tradition of success that pulls eyeballs

It's difficult to create new rivalries when you only play 2 other schools yearly.

At least the SEC has the geography to keep the hate spiked

Its funny, cause while I agree about Maryland and PSU for football...Penn State doesn't have any rivals anymore either.  Maryland was their 3rd biggest (in terms of meetings) rival after Pitt and Cuse...who they don't play anymore.  Maybe WVU is there too, but they don't play anymore either.  They've been in the B10 for 35 years, but they aren't anyone's rival.  Maybe OSU WAYYYY after Michigan.  Hell, they sell that lame Unrivaled merch which they think is a flex...but its not.

Maryland football actually was in a pretty good place heading in.  Friedgen had legitimately good teams early on, and his last year wasn't bad before he got fired.  Edsall seemed like he had some stuff going and then fell apart.  Then they just imploded.  First the Durkin mess, and no letting Locksley just coast on mediocrity for years and years.  And now the shine is off of Under Armor and NIL makes their geographic advantages much less worthwhile.

Why are you dissing the Land Grant Trophy game with Michigan State?

Cause we all know its WAY less prestigious than the vaunted Governors Victory Bell with Minnesota that was likely one of the main reasons Matt Campbell took the job.
