If Al McGuire was a college football coach in 2026, he'd be Lane Kiffin.

Ugh. No.
His contemporaries around the sport loved Al. He and Dean Smith - two guys whose personalities couldn't be much less alike - were close friends. Same with Bob Knight.
Lane's own mentors (see: Saban, Norm Chow) think he's a chud.

Quote from: JWags85 on September 18, 2026, 03:06:50 AMAlso, pretty sure Al Davis said all the crap that he did about Kiffin and had the issues with him cause he tried to get Kiffin to resign after that awful first season, Kiffin refused (understandably) and forced Davis to fire him part way into Year 2.

I'll just say this about the Raiders situation - It's really hard to fire a coach for cause in the absence of some major scandal. Al Davis fired Kiffin for cause, and won total victory when Kiffin challenged it legally.

What you said. It was just my (seemingly failed) attempt at being hilarious.

Just saw a comment on MU's Senior Night game and it reminded me that I don't think this has been discussed here.  Ohio State did senior night week 1 against Ball State?  Just about the biggest beta move OSU could make.

Quote from: Pakuni on September 18, 2026, 10:10:26 AMYeah, but at what?

As I said in my previous post, there is pre-Bama Lane and post-Bama Lane.  Post-Bama lane is a great coach, at the very least, well above average.

FAU had a 40% winning percentage in FBS before Lane and only 2 winning records, 30% in the 5 years before Lane got there.  He won 11 games twice in 3 years and had almost a 70% winning percentage despite a rough Year 2.  Taggert and Herman plummeted right back down to a sub 40% winning percentage in the 5 years after he left.

Then Ole Miss.  2 10 win seasons in 49 years since Johnny Vaught's 1962 perfect season.  Lane did it 4 times in his last 5 seasons at a program coming off sanctions and Matt Luke's mediocrity, 3 top 10 finishes (Freeze had the only other one in 40+ years), first share of an SEC title in 20+ years, and a CFB berth (even if you don't give him credit for the 2 wins).  Incredibly impressive at a program where at one time going 25-20 over 4 seasons was notable enough to get Tuberville the Auburn job.

Can he do it at a program with real scrutiny and expectations like LSU?  That remains to be seen.  Much much different animal and challenge.  And I can totally understand and justify crowning him "great" until then.

But thus far he's been great at culture building and self/program promotion in Baton Rouge in the first 9-10 months.  Getting a bunch of frat dudes to heckle and talk crap to the team going in and out of practice this week was hilarious.  Tomorrow night is going to be absolutely insane.  LSU either loses or wins by 20+, IMO.  If its the latter (or even if they win period), the hype train is going to be blasting at full steam and Kiffin at his most bombastic into A&M in BR next week.

Lot of people say he is the "worst" or the "worst person in college football". Do people really think Lane is worse than Brian Kelly?  Both are pretty boys who look out for number one, but one is entertaining and a great quote/soundbite...the other is a surly grumpy malcontent who killed a kid.

I don't think anyone is suggesting Kiffin is a bad coach. It's more that I took issue with "Spurrier 2.0," which in fairness you've since clarified.
Kiffin has stacked plenty of wins, but it's also fair to point out he's never really won anything.

Crazy how the frat bros video just happened to leak to the Pat McAfee show. Or how his halftime speech during the Clemson game just happened to leak.

If your bar for whether Lane is a good or bad person is set at Brian Kelly, then yes, he clears that very low threshold. I think both are puds

Ticket prices must be soaring to watch them play Eastern Michigan in weather like this.
