Too bad.  I was thinking that sending him to Syria might have calmed Muggsy.

He certainly had his share of controversies (or whatever word is appropriate here), but he was the biggest icon in wrestling history. To go from the beloved All American character of the mid 80's - early 90's, to re-inventing himself with his NWO heel turn in the mid/late 90's.

I remember watching his TV matches in the 80's with my younger brother and calling out the moves in advance and counting down to the comeback with remarkable accuracy.

He was an icon.

I don't think there is any debating that when you think about it.  He was the tentpole main attraction Vince McMahon built WWF around when he took it over from his father.  He was the first wrestler to truly cross over into movies/TV in a meaningful way, which set the roadmap for what the Rock, Cena, and Bautista have done. Was the first true breakout merchandising success in wrestling.

I mean, I wasn't super into wrestling as a kid, it mostly revolved around the WCW/WWF video games, but the second I saw the headline about his death, my immediate mental thought was "OH NO BROTHER!"

Also, randomly, the Costco we go to is in Clearwater, which had been his homebase forever. We were checking out behind a guy wearing a vintage Hulkamania t shirt.  Surprisingly, given his numerous negative public incidents/statements, the woman working started raving about what a nice guy he was when he came in and the manager nearby echoed the same and said "oh yea, Terry is really great".  Maybe he softened in old age or just really was in a good mood about cheap hot dogs.

I hope he, Macho Man, and Miss Elizabeth can finally work out their differences.

Tike flies. Seems like it was just yesterday Hulk was selling out his fellow wrestlers who were seeking extravagances like health care and five-day work weeks

And only a decade since he was outed as a racist.

I was at that "match". It was a Friday night at the Bradley Center in February. MM slaps HH then the whole thing was aired A MONTH later on NBC's Saturday Night Main Event.  they kept the break up of the Mega Powers in the can for 4 weeks only 18,000 people in Milwaukee knew about.

That sums up life in 1989.

I always wondered how much of that had to do with his success/performance as Thunderlips in Rocky, who was a total heel when Hulk very much was not

That's right, that was in Milwaukee. The altercation backstage is also clearly the Bradley Center. Absolutely crazy that it didn't air for a month afterwards, and as you mentioned, only people at the show knew. I can't imagine going to that show, then watching PrimeTime Wrestling or WWF Superstars for a month and being like "WTF? Those guys broke up!".

Good recollection!
