The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is well worth the visit.

Been to the National and Milwaukee and agree. I would add Prague to the international list. Been there, and it is highly rated as a world class zoo.

Milwaukee Zoo is getting pretty dated, but the design and enclosure theory they implemented at the time keep it from feeling overly old or depressing like some older zoos do.

Columbus Zoo is exceptional.

Obviously not amongst the tops, but the updates and renovations to the Central Park Zoo are beautiful and very impressive which get it back to a really cool spot instead of the tiny dated mess in a cool location, which it had been for years.

I'm actually a big fan of the London Zoo.  Incredible location right in Regent's Park in the heart of the city.  Really good blend of some of the century plus old historical buildings/exhibits with new beautiful exhibits.  Also, find it cool that they have lions but Asiatic instead of African, and they have Tigers, but Sumatran, instead of the Bengal or Siberian you normally see.

I found the Denver Zoo absolutely stellar

Omaha is consistently rated the best zoo in the US for a reason.

Agree on the emotions, but thoughts?

OK, but Scoop is a much better zoo than McCormick ever was.

Went to Honolulu Zoo during an off day of the MU Maui. Two huge tortoises were getting it in and the sounds were anazing (pawz).

Also, when it started raining a gorilla smartly put a blanket over its head

Stop it with this talk about the tortoises getting it on! Muggsy gets really excited when he reads things like this.

Nothing beats the Singapore zoo... except possibly their night safari.

Have to rep the San Diego zoo as one of the national top spots and add the Wild Animal Park as a great adjunct

Outstanding operation ahd caretakers.  Tremendous people there.

Zoo Tampa is totally fine.  On the small side, but decent.  Combine it with nearby Busch Gardens and you have a decently complete zoo.  Oddly neither has a small mammal house or a reptile/aquatic house, no indoor exhibits to speak off.  I can't think of many zoos that don't have either.

On the plus side, my 2 year old is OBSESSED with giraffes.  Favorite animal by far, only one of his peer group that puts them near the top.  And Zoo Tampa has a giraffe feeding experience.  So this weekend he got to feed the herd of 4 Masai giraffes some leaves and romaine hearts, and then fill their treat containers.  He was out of his mind happy and dumbfounded and the keepers were amazing.

Stuff like that, and behind the scenes activities, are some of the best public facing stuff that zoos do, IMO (obviously, conservation and breeding to save species top it).  Bring in revenue to fund the great work they do, and help bring everything to life and make it all the more tangible, which also helps drive the conservation work.
