A lot of talk this morning on Greenberg's show about a BE / ACC merger.

Is this thing becoming serious? The panelist on the show all said it "was a no brainer".

I'm not a fan but I can't ignore the smoke.

MU Fan in Connecticut

ACC only sending 4 of 18 teams and the remainder tanking in the tournament may have something to do with it.

Duke excepted because I expect Duke to play great if Flagg is healthy.

I'm good with it if the ACC can become a college version of the G League for the Big East.
Wild horses couldn't drag me into either political party, but for very different reasons.

If in merger they mean some schools leave the ACC for the Big East, I'll take that.

Surprised this thread didn't get more traction. I don't know if I like this or not. On one hand we've been there before with the old big east but on the other hand things keep shifting and we don't want to be left behind. Adding teams like Duke, UNC, Louisville and even teams that have been down like Cuse could make for a conference that could compete with the SEC and Big Ten from a monetary standpoint it might work. At the same time I don't want us and the other bball schools left in the lurch. But perhaps this also helps keep UConn for the long haul if football for them is an issue (from a conference standpoint).
Just been a lot more discussion on this one started by Coach K and then discussed by Petino and the Hurley the other day in addition to the already mentioned Greenberg. Seems with more discussion. I find it all interesting to think about.

Guess a perfect match of two tankers.

I could see it. I would hate it if it happens. I think no matter how you slice it,  we end up in a western division with Cal, Stanford, and SMU

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Big Papi

I doubt there is a merger between the two.  I do expect some sort of scheduling collaboration be it an ACC/BE challenge or some mini tournament(s) or some prioritized non-conference scheduling.

My brother-in-law, a Wake Forest grad, already thinks the ACC has become a bit of a joke with west coast teams.  Now all we need to do is have the Big East join.

It would be funny to suddenly have Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College, Louisville back with the Big East.

West Virginia and Cincinnati made out a lot better than the other former Big East Schools.

Yes, WVU is clearly a destination job these days.  I am sure UC will enjoy the Crown.

That would be awful. Make it 2 divisions with historically best big east and ACC schools in one and then the rest in the other. Football could be reorganized into one division or a couple smaller divisions.

They could be called the "Champions Division" and the "Chumps Division".  Each year the best team in the Chumps would move up to replace the worst team in the Champions.

Perfect! Like soccer promotion/relegation - ha! Chumps division can't go to the tourney

I think a scheduling alliance is far more likely, but for amusement:

ACC/Big East Basketball (Need divisions for sheer size)

East Division
Boston College
UConn
Georgetown
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
Providence
Seton Hall
St. John's
Syracuse
Villanova

Atlantic Division
Clemson
Duke
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Miami
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

Western Division
Butler
California
Creighton
DePaul
Louisville
Marquette
Memphis
SMU
Stanford
Xavier

Play everyone in your division once (eight games), along with four protected rivals that you place twice (twelve games); play another four games from each division, selected based on matchups annually (twenty games). The top-16 teams of the league get invited into the ACC/BE Tournament, held at MSG annually. Football can get Charlotte as a tournament site :)

Split between FOX, ESPN and Peacock due to magnitude of inventory.

Notre dame is west of Louisville but in your east division?

Wow look at all those games I won't have interest in.  The West is a crappier version of CUSA from the early 00s.

0% chance of ever happening but as you said, for amusement... (Sorry DePaul, Butler, and Seton Hall.)

Midwest Division
1) Marquette
2) Creighton
3) Notre Dame
4) Louisville
5) Xavier

Northeast Division
1) UConn
2) St. John's
3) Georgetown
4) Syracuse
5) Providence

Southeast Division
1) North Carolina
2) Duke
3) Virginia
4) Pitt
5) Villanova

Geographically would make more sense to flip Georgetown and Villanova but I wanted to keep Syracuse and Georgetown together.

I think planning for UNC as a member is not prudent. We need to be realistic in these completely hypothetical and fantastical scenarios. :D

ND would get political pull to stay with East coast; no way they'd want to go West.
