Quote from: TucsonLobo on March 20, 2025, 11:49:04 AMMarquette is 26 in Kenpom DRtg. Against the no. 24 defensive team, VCU, Dent had 40.

At St. Johns, Dent played better than Kam, with 6 assists to Kam's 1, and only 3 fewer points. Where the Lobos struggled against St. John's most was in rebounding (Nelly had just 4), but still did better than Marquette (-17 to -22). And I think we'll have the rebounding advantage over Marquette.

Who's comparing Dent to Ja Morant? I've never heard that comparison made. He's by no means an exceptional athlete like Ja. I'd say he's more like old-man Andre Miller.

If the refs let them play, the game's a toss-up. With a tight whistle, Marquette will be impacted more and the Lobos win by 7-12.

Saying Dent is better then a 2nd team all american is crazy lol. Enjoy watching your borderline nba talent get harassed.

This is flat out wrong!!!

Quote from: MU82 on March 20, 2025, 11:56:13 AMWith Dent pretty much guaranteed 50 points against Marquette's lousy defense, I wonder if it's too late for Shaka to reject the NCAA bid and go to the NIT.

If he does that, and also punches one of his players in the face, it will make him a Marquette legend!

Rumor is Shaka is already back in Austin begging for his old job back.

Hope the Lobos get absolutely crushed

It's MU fans mentioning Ja Morant and worrying if this could turn out the same way  as playing Murray State in the tourney did several years ago. There is some definite PTSD.

Yeah, I think it's me that started the Ja Morant line of thought. More just that Wojo's strategy was to collapse on him so he wouldn't score, but he killed us with his passing. It sounded like Dent had the potential to do the same.

Obviously he's not as good as Morant, but more along the lines on if he could have a similar impact.

Again, Wojo didn't have Stevie, Chase and Zaide at his disposal. And even if he did, Wojo wouldn't have known how to deploy them.

I am NOT saying Dent won't give us trouble. He seems to be a very good player capable of giving any opponent trouble. Just saying the personnel suggests different defensive strategy than the one Wojo used against Ja.

I don't think adjD is where you should be looking.  Check out offensive TO%. Dent murders teams in transition and is average in the halfcourt. MU is elite at protecting the ball, 8th in the country.  Yall havent played a team even close to that.  Your best is your season opener against Nicholls state (48th). Next two are against Nevada (63rd). In 85 minutes against Nevada yall only forced 21 turnovers and barely won both games. 16 of your opponets rank in the bottom third of offensive TO%.

Basketball isn't played on paper, but I think you might have a harder time getting in transition than you usually do. If thats the case, I'm not sure if Dent will have the big game you're hoping for.

Seriously, NM is not a good match-up for us. Their front court is 6'9", 6'9" and 6'10". Their center Nelly Joseph is ranked #9 in the NCAA for defensive rebounding comparable to Tarris Reed at #13.

Donovan Dent at 6'2" is #23 in the nation in assists and shoots 40% from 3.

Tru Washingtion is ranked #35 in stl % and shoots 35% from 3.

Mustapha Amzil at 6'9" is another decent rebounder who shoots too many 3's given his 29% shooting percent.

Filip Borovicanin is their power forward/backup center at 6'9" who is ranked 431 nationally in Defensive Rebounding.

Bench also has size and some shooting skills.

We should win by 3 according to KenPom

Counterpoint, they are a great matchup for us. Their offense relies heavily on transition and we are top 10 in the nation at not turning the ball over.

Great. Also ...

Against the no. 61 defensive team, Boise State, on Feb. 19,  Dent had 17 on 4-for-13 shooting, with 4 TOs as his team lost.

Ipso fatso, he's doomed against the #26 defensive team.

BTW, I actually don't believe that. Just showing that maybe it's kinda silly to make the kind of projection you did.

LOL.

New Mexico May certainly win but this "analysis" is something else.

The 7/10 and 8/9 matchups are supposed to be tough. I'd have been surprised if Marquette (or UNM) was a big favorite.

I'm a big-time optimist but I'm also realistic enough to know we could lose the same way we've lost several other games - by shooting poorly and by failing to secure defensive rebounds. But I also think if we shoot decently, take care of the ball the way we usually do and defend the way we can, we're good enough to beat UNM (and many other NCAAT teams).

Was looking at some pics from today's practice.  I assume it has something to do with the angle but look at the size of Clark in this picture, even compared to Ben.

Who is 42 there on the left. He looks almost as tall. Ben looks further back. This picture is very deceiving.

If you are closer to the camera and the photo is shot from the floor you will appear taller than those further away.

All I have to say is "we got this".

Never seen Dent except for clips but I know Kam is better.

sure, if they play a couple standard deviations above who they are, we might lose. But if we do too, they get beat. We are better, we will win.

We win, I'm going to quote this post and "Told you so"

We lose, say whatever you want cause I'll brood for two weeks and not read anything on scoop till November. ;)
