I wasn't asking. :)

Usually it is someone whose views on several threads align with mine - not saying I have any big disagreements with you.

Ive always been curious what makes people crack in that regard.  Its such a strange thing to me, especially when its "normal" everyday people and not the terminally online basement trolls who are very much the fuel for the stereotype.

I frequented an unrelated message board in my mid 20s that was a really eclectic mix of people.  One guy who was my age and also Chicago based at the time PM'd me a few times about Chicago stuff I'd posted/commented on and we struck up a friendship of sorts.  He'd done it with a few others so he organized drinks one Saturday afternoon with 4-5 of us, mixed gender gathering.  Everyone was normal and friendly.  He and I ended up becoming fast friends and was someone I hung out with 1-2 times a week and I still talk to weekly, even no longer being in Chicago.

However, turns out one of the other guys started messaging another female from the board, found out where she worked, emailed her work email when she stopped replying to PMs.  All sorts of unhinged nonsense.  And he was a seemingly normal outgoing dude with a good job and a cool dog.  It was just so strange.

TLDR, Internet stalking is strange and seems to afflict all spectrum of peoples.

forgetful

I'll never understand why people try to harm others in their real life on a message board.

I try to keep who I am under wraps for that reason, although there are a couple on here who know who I am, because I've given them some career advice.

Even those I disagree with, I'd go out of my way to help them in real life if they needed it, i.e. find a job, whatever. I just don't understand how/why others would actually try to harm people on a message board.

Was this scoop's Red Wedding?

tower912

Not my thing, either.  I also don't take generic message board banter all that personally. Looking at the histories of the posters involved, it appears message board grudges carried over to real life.  Sad.

I'm an ass on Reddit and things have gotten heated on here at times but overall this is an alumni/fan forum it's insane people would be so petty to get that personal when the network is MUs main selling point.

I doxxed myself years ago back when I had less to lose and pride of an argument was everything. I have only looked up 2 posters on Facebook like a decade ago (who I didn't already know) because they were a year older and 2 yrs younger respectively so I was curious if we crossed paths.

Im of the belief that no human can truly handle the internet. The sheer amount of information available and the power (or at least illusion of it) that it can bring is too overwhelming for our brains to handle. None of us who use it completely avoid some of its negative side effects but most of us have enough sense or willpower to at least come out with enough positives that it balances the negatives. But there are some who truly can't handle it. They are broken by the internet. Somehow their online lives become important enough to compromise their offline values.

I used to think this group was exceedingly small.  But I worry the more immersive this technology becomes, the harder it will be to not be broken. My daughter turned five today. Decision I'm most dreading is when to allow her a device with an internet connection.

Sorry for the doom rant,  but the question you're curious about is also something I've wondered about a lot

I think many of us have been curious enough in our lifetime to see if we have encountered each other or crossed paths, but only if that information has been offered up freely. (How many dentists can there really be in East Troy, if you really wanted to know I guess you could figure it out).

I have a couple very close friends who I gained through starting out on an internet community and we send each other local goodies at least a couple times a year and chat weekly. You can find likeminded people who share your interests and connect with them when you otherwise would not have and that's positive.

On the flip side, trying to harm or destroy someone's livelihood because you don't like them on a college basketball message board is psychotic behavior and I hope this sort of degenerate behavior does not translate to friends and loved ones in real life. I'm not particularly subtle in my disdain for some opinions but at the end of the day we are all tough guys when it's a keyboard as our weapon of choice. Nothing I say or do here is going to change the way I live day to day.

The complete and utter inability to denounce Keefe's actions meant to me that they not only were indifferent, but condone it. And it makes me sad that a community as strong as Marquette's would have people like this. I have gone out of my way for alums in career matters, and others have helped me as well in return. If you don't want to be a productive member of the family, then just don't engage.

Perhaps take up Pickleball instead, we know a guy who can hook you up after all.

I think the biggest thing I'm going to impress upon my son, and something that I need to remind myself of ALL THE TIME, is that the internet (especially social media and anywhere you can shotgun opinions recklessly) is not real life.

There is that classic and funny Tyler the Creator tweet (paraphrasing)..."how is cyber bullying real? Dude, just walk away from the screen, close your eyes"  And really, while its not the easy cause the internet is SO pervasive and consumes, its that simple.

The whole idea of "go touch grass" is pretty profound.  With algorithms and feed personalization, you can see 25 of a similar crazy/doomer/unhinged/depressing perspective and it feels like its the actual prevailing opinion or reality when its likely a minuscule fragment of people.

Turn it off, walk away, do something "real" and you can avoid A LOT.  And its something I'm trying to do every day in 2025.

It kind of goes to what I said a few posts above.  I was a Keefe (more accurately Crash) fan, which it why it was so bothersome and disappointing that it happened.  He was incredibly generous, thoughtful, and helpful to me on an interpersonal level.  Assisted me with some professional and social things that some of my extended family wouldn't even do.  Granted, most of that happened when he was still just posting a bunch of haikus and bragging a bit much.  But even as he got more out there, we still had good and helpful conversations offline.

But despite how I felt about him personally, I couldn't condone or shrug off that sort of thing (I couldn't even do that for any friend or family that did it, its just lunatic behavior).  I didn't feel the need to excessively extrapolate it to his overall character and rail on it here, but I could understand why those who didn't have a relationship with him outside of his posting history would.

I don't mind being disagreed with here.  I like it.  Have a creative thought.  Back it up.  Defend it with all of your might. Accept that you, too, will be challenged.
I don't mind being insulted.   The worst insult I have received here here does not reach the top 10 during an average single shift at the fire department.  Insults here amuse me.  The more creative the better.  I rarely take them seriously.

Friends, it is a message board full of MU fans.  Except some trolls.  But even they are funny in their own way.  It is a crowded sports bar with a 100 conversations going on at once, except when the game is on.  Of course we are going to disagree.  Duh.  And sometimes, you grow up and your old sports bar loses some appeal.  Too loud, too noisy.  Life.
We all have left the bar muttering about some stupid SOB.  Most of us have been the stupid SOB at some point.

What a wacky coincidence this was done, after all these "years", "early this morning" of... January 6th.

Anyway, there are some bad people in DC and I hope we beat the crap out of em tonight. Cooley & his bois need to be reminded that they are not very good. Very soft 12-2 record. Have fun playing Wednesday at MSG, Hoyas.

I do want to address this - not your particular case, but self-dox in particular.  Or, let's say, the unintended dox.

There are cases, where folks - engaging in a friendly conversation, probably mentioned too much about themselves.  The "dentists", and/or their office locations is a great example of this.  Regardless of them mentioning it, none of us should be using it against them, or as a "gotcha".  I won't say I'm guiltless in this, just acknowledging it should stop.

Another is from information that we've read here, whether shared by that particular poster or not.  Sorry but I'll use @MU82 as an example.  His real first name has been used on the forum more times than I know.  Probably because he's a friendly guy and has personally interacted with several of us.  But that's information we should't be putting in public for him.  Staying in his realm, a couple weeks ago I make a (poor) joke about an old article of his that was certainly originally used here as a dox. It had been mentioned so many times that it was just a memory at that point.  I didn't mean any additional harm, and PM'd to apologize, but it still didn't justify my regurgitation.

In the now removed thread, someone had made a joke about another poster that maybe he wasn't posting "because he is at home and not at the office".  WTF?  How would you know that?  Why would you care where someone posts from?  And why was his workplace mentioned on the forum the previous few weeks?  That is, in part, what got me really angry.

Anyhow, I'm just saying, be careful what you share, be even more careful what you re-post.  I don't *think* most of it is intended to be malicious.  But, you don't really know where that line is for someone else.
