San Diego Trip, Golf, Where to stay, restaurants, etc

Going with the fam to San Diego over Spring Break, have a tee time at Torrey Pines South already.  Looking for other golf rec's (myself and my 12 yo son will be playing) and rec's on what part of San Diego to stay.  Thanks and Happy Holidays

Several good hotels near Torrey or Del Mar
La Jolla Shores is our favorite beach you can rent a kayak or take a long walk on the shore to tidal pools
Birch Aquarium is just down the road

Edit: If you're really stuck on this side of the border, head toward the Anza-Borrego Desert and find a nice resort. My best suggestion.

Seriously though, it's kitschy but Belmont Park beachside amusement park. The boardwalk along the beach has several restaurants and is interesting as well.

Torrey sucks after the Jones family got its hands on it but it's a pretty course.  Have patience because it can play slow.

Try Balboa Park.  It's a public course but it's a classic golden era design with great views of the area.  This one plays slow, too, however.

Pacific Beach is a convenient and energetic area to stay. Tower 23 is a great hotel on the beach, and along the boardwalk that goes all the way to Belmont Park as mentioned above. Sea World nearby too, and a quick and easy 10-15 minute ride from San Diego airport, and an easy 10 minute ride into La Jolla.  The Catamaran Resort Hotel is nearby too, and a bit quieter, perhaps more family friendly than Tower 23.

Coronado Municipal Golf Course is a scenic course that offers great views of the downtown San Diego, the bay, etc.  Make a day of it and visit Hotel Del Coronado while you're there playing golf.

take a drive(~2 hour drive) out to the coachella valley and palm springs-every thursday they have a big street festival-music-food-art vendors-jewelry-GOLF-GOLF-GOLF- and they have a quaint little casino

I always liked Steele Canyon, a 27-hole Gary Player facility. They have 3 distinct 9s, and the one to make sure you play is the Canyon Course, with incredible views and dramatic elevations. Both the Ranch and Vineyard are nice, too; I prefer the Vineyard but the Ranch is also great - it winds through an actual ranch.

It might seem like a cliche, but the zoo really is fabulous. I don't think your 12-year-old is too old for it. La Jolla is fun, with all the sea lions out and some good restaurants. Downtown near the ballpark is cool.

Heading out there next week for work...will try to walk onto Torrey Pines Monday, which, even though I am playing really well now, could be a rough round since it's probably in tournament shape...
