I know its football, but in light of UM reportably offering $10 million to a quarterback to play at The Big House, is Shaka's culture mantra sustainable in the era of pay for play, hey?

I would say yes, and all you need to do is look at this clip from Matt Painter:

https://x.com/BoilerBurner1/status/1857488466117878098

Essentially, he is mocking recruits who go elsewhere because they aren't guaranteed to play at Purdue. A recruit told Painter "if I go to ______ they will give me minutes right away." Painter responded with "Yeah, no sh*t, they're not as good as we are." When your culture is winning and sending kids to the NBA, that's sustainable.

Go play and peak now, or you can grow here. It's fantastic.

No.  That's why Kam took big money to play elsewhere.

Impeccable timing as always.

I can say culture at MU has made three seasons and four games so far. I get your point and think it is harder to do for most places. When I saw the guys on the bench clapping to the defense chant I could not believe it.

Shaka truly has built a culture or a cult. I do not think you could find many teams or programs that have the MU culture. Now, we will see how far a crazy good culture can take the program.

Next to Shaka, Painter is far and away my favorite coach.  He is doing it right.  The transfer portal will take some of our talent in the future. It will suck. Shaka will stay the course and I'm totally bought in.

The good news is Shaka isn't really going after the top ranked player at any position, like the QB Michigan football is offering $10MM to.

I have to think so, the best get playing time.
And with Milwaukee being a big market, they will get just compensation.

Look at the Cleveland Cavaliers right now. Dominating the NBA. Their roster is arguably weaker than any of the rosters LeBron had with them back in their heyday.

But they have a strong culture, and a balanced team that plays well together.

Talent is one thing, its important, but culture and well coached teams can beat pure talent any day of the week.

Strongly disagree! This is a topic that has relevance, in light of the money being toss around, and is being heavily covered and discussed in the media. Perhaps you don't have the time to pay attention to these outlets, hey?

The top recruits will almost certainly have bidding wars.  At least in certain cases.  I'd argue it's a bigger deal in football because that's where the big money is going to be spent.  Will there be exceptions in hoops?  Yes.  Duke is spreading big money around amongst others.

Marquette has sniffed around some of these type of players but has built a successful program around culture (though I'd argue it's a catchphrase as much as anything).

Purdue has come up as we head into next week and they're not spending big money.  There are many ways to succeed.  If Marquette and the Big East were a football program/league, I'd be concerned.

The fact we didn't lose Kam to Memphis with Penny & FedEx is a shining example of how our culture (and our NIL infrastructure) is working.

Is paying for players and playing the transfer market sustainable? We've kind of seen the one and done strategy fizzle out a bit.

I think there's a lot of risk in both strategies. It comes down to identifying talent and getting people to buy into a style. Some coaches might be able to do that with new players every year, but Shaka seems to try and develop the guys over time to have a consistent pipeline of talent.

I'm sure we will have down years if talent doesn't hit or we have transfers, but I can't really argue with the results so far.
