Juan Anderson's Mixtape

Ugly game. Need Jop and Gold to hit the open 3s.  But a win.

Need Owens back. Badly need him as a bench scorer.  Hopefully Sean returns this year because we need a legit backup PG.

Hopefully the rest of the bench shows some in season growth.  Royce provided a spark until cramping up.  Need Zaide and Tre to find their spots on offense.

Any concerns about our rebounding or was it  because of the trapping most of the game?

Yall can complain as much as you want but the offensive philosophy is not going to change.
Scoop motto:
Quote from: ATL MU Warrior on February 06, 2025, 06:04:29 PMthe stats bear that out, but

Herman Cain

1. MU is 3-0 that is a good thing.
2. Kids are hustling on defense that is a good thing.
3. Several players have definitely proven they cannot shoot, that is a bad thing
4. MU has room for improvement if they are going to be able to compete the next three games.
5. MU Coaching staff should consider emphasizing using non dominant hand more. Too many players again this year who only can drive and shoot with dominant hand. Is a problem when some of those players are your primary scoring threat.

Quote from: Holy hell all time on November 11, 2024, 10:42:24 PMNot sure a philosophical change to a program that has been a 2 seed in back to back NCAA Tournaments is needed because of a bad game against a bad team.

Who asked for a change in philosophy?

Our starting 5 shot 0 3s ALL SEASON last year.
Joplin took a lot, but that's 2 games in his last 4 where he's done this.

Marquette had a pg that could create open buckets for everyone on the court last season.
He's flown the coop.
So, everything will be MUCH harder in the HC offense this season, as we should have all expected... Wait for the game against Sconnie, first to 55 wins 😂

In all seriousness all I'm saying is that the "easy" solution is pick and pop with Ben and Jop taking 3s- but that's the thing, it's "easy" because teams aren't going nuts stepping out to defend a Benny 3. Guess what, kid can't shoot right now. Joplin, who can actually shoot, is even missing in bunches because the maestro isn't setting him up with perfect passes in his shooting pocket to catch and drain.

So, back in the lab for coach Nevada.
Start with more Kam, it's foolproof. I don't get paid to figure out the rest, I'll leave that to them.

I'm actually more bullish on this years squad than I was 3 games ago. The defense might be the best of the Shaka era, that'll be good for top 15/20, and that travels when you have Kam. The rest will fall in place, especially after Nevada and Shaka get back in the lab

Quote from: whitykj on November 11, 2024, 10:25:30 PMI'm gonna die on the hill that Jop needs to be allowed to have a mid range game. He's so hot and cold he needs a way to warm up as the game goes. And he needs to stop driving, it's so bad.

I totally agree. And Ben in the post. They said multiple times on tv that Ben is taller than Oso. Let him work in the post and kick out to shooters and drivers.

Seems like they work Ben on the perimeter far too often.

Kam is setting up guys with just as wide open of shots as Kolek was. They missed them tonight. It happens in college basketball sometimes.

The looks Jop and Gold are getting are wide open. Same with Chase and Stevie. And he's averaging 6.33 assist per game even with the bigs bricking wide open looks.

Two completely different players and the objective is to have Gold on the perimeter on offense.

Huh??

Kams passing has been excellent. I've actually been shocked at how many wide open looks we've gotten through 3 games

We got a bunch of guys who cant shoot(at least right now) around him. He is getting us fantastic looks continually though.
Lazar picking up where the BIG 3 left off....

Kams passing has been fine.

It's not close to what TyKos passing was last season and the one before.

I'd be shocked if the quality of looks is as good this season but I obviously can't quantify that, cue the stat nerds...
Wait until we actually play a normal team. These are 300 KenPom squads.

I mean it's no slight to Kam, Tyler was the best passer this university has ever seent.

Of course they are different, but 21 of Ben's 26 shots this season are from behind the 3 point arc, and he has made 3 of his 5 inside the arc.

Gotta get him some closer looks to expand his offense if they are going to roll with him at the 5 more often than the 4...which obviously with this personnel they will.

George Mason is better than 4 big east teams at 80.

That's not accurate. He didn't shoot many, but it wasn't zero and we heard all summer that him shooting threes was going to be part of the offense. Which lasted until we saw that shooting form that is the talk of Phoenix now.

Once George Mason plays Central Michigan on Wed... Well ... Maybe we'll see if they can live up to their "80'.  Though to be fair, thus far the only thing I can say about central Michigan is they they keep games close!

DoctorV

Right but semantics, and you get the point. How many did he miss last year, 2?

The 5 in the Nevada/Shaka offense is "meant" to be a ball handling 5 that can stretch the floor, catch and read, pass effectively and survey the entire floor to help run the HC offense, with the ability to catch and finish at the hoop and with the threat of the catch and shoot in the pick and pop.

Things change, personnel changes, so it's all fluid.

Ben Gold is doing a bunch of the last part of my "description" of the ideal 5, without the actual pop part in the pick and pop.
He's not doing the other parts.
His passing needs to be better, his dribbling better, his ability to read the defense and get others involved needs to be better.

He's trying, and he shows flashes, but Marquette needs to concentrate on him doing the part other than the shooting in order to make him an effective 5 in this offense, imo

Not really.  I've come to accept that Shaka's system doesn't emphasize rebounding.

The defense is good despite the rebounding weakness.
