Brother Pakuni:

I suspect you don't live in Florida. If you did, you would know that after Ian, our state government had destroyed bridges to barrier islands on the west coast rebuilt in seven days. As a resident, you also would know that public safety and our national guard were on the barrier islands and in areas hard hit almost immediately. The goal was wellness checks on our citizenry who weren't wise enough to leave.

Even our governor was a voice of reason.

We can debate whether Florida is an inviting state for those "who aren't in my income bracket", whatever you think that might be. But lets leave aspersions about recovery out of this. We are not Louisiana!

Brother dgies,

I didn't write anything about recovery.

I'm not an expert on the economics of hurricane recovery, but I suspect it may be more cost-effective in the long run to build hurricane proof/resistant infrastructure than it is to send in the National Guard and emergency construction crews every time a big storm comes through.
And if $10 a month helps accomplish that, it seems like a small price to pay. You're going to pay either way, so why not be smart about it?
As always, you're free to disagree.

As someone in healthcare, it's always cheaper and better outcomes to respond to an emergency than try to prevent it.

can't get past the paywall and not about to just because it's some garbage you put out there.  i'd rather donate my dollar(s) to hurricane people since fema is running in the red zone and hasn't received their newly printed money yet, but have to wait their turn as it seems the hierarchy goes, illegals, lebanon, ukraine...then US

not sure what the tough break for me is, my place is dry in Az last I checked.  golf courses are going thru their stages of overseed and should be ready for me in about 3 weeks which is when I plan on heading down.  only thing I need to worry about are the illegals-the ones getting all the money that should have been readily available for our own poor tax paying Americans who's homes have been or will about to be washed away

I get what you are saying and our state is doing its best to harden our infrastructure.

Is it good enough? Maybe not. Any engineer can point out things we could do better. But with 23 million people and more coastline than just about any other state outside Alaska, we're doing pretty good.

You should see the screaming now after the Sunrise collapse caused our legislature to pass a law requiring minimum standards for state of good repair on condos. I'm delighted our legislature and governor hasn't budged on this one, despite painful pressure. But is has not been easy.

And, we need to retrofit millions of buildings constructed before Andrew. This needs to happen and we will get there, but it takes time.

Legislature is doing a great job of harden  infrastructure, over many decades.

Looks like we are getting the worst combination of storm surge  and wind damage in this storm from a business perspective.

Home already has roof damage from Helene, and am waiting on those repairs . Wonder if we lose the entire roof this go around.

Still dealing with impact in Western Carolina on operations.

Hopefully southwest, west coast, PNW, Great Plains, upper Midwest, rust belt, New England, upper Atlantic coast, DMV operations still running smoothly

Mom and sister are headed inland, my plans have now shifted to drive down there, and then drive back.  I can rent a Prius up here in Maryland to save on gas, but also fill up in Northern Florida in case of gas shortages, plan is to leave early Friday or Saturday AM.

A good friend just drove from Tampa Bay to Orlando today in preparation for their flight out tomorrow morning. All of the tolls were open and the emergency lanes were open to allow for more traffic flow. It still took them 3 hours (!!) to make that short trip.

All I know is I would get the H out of Tampa.  15 foot potential surges doesn't sound fun.

Not that easy.  I-75 is gridlock, where do you go exactly and can you get enough gas to travel far enough away?

What do you think is more likely, that your conspiracy theories are true and that you're in the small group of people that "get it" because you have rare information? Or that you're incorrect, like everyone that went to your university is telling you?

Currently, 75 only has major slow downs at the merge with the turnpike.
Also southbound to Ft Lauderdale is open.
Take FL 60 east.

That being said, that they haven't done contra flow on 75 across Tampa bay is criminal.

Things can change in the next 24-48 hours but people must get out of there immediately.  What else can be done pbi?

They can open the southbound lanes of I-75 to northbound traffic.

Just heard from my friend who is out there. They left early this morning and, while busy, wasn't standstill by any stretch. They got a hotel near Gainesville where they are waiting it out.

Get  cargo planes there, mobilize all airline carriers, and fly as many people out of there as possible.
