11am track now back north, meaning that the storm surge would be ugly for the Tampa Bay area. And it walks right over Orlando.
It is also now a cat 4 with a projection of a cat 5. the 80 knot increase in 24 hours is the third fastest ever., after Wilma (2005) and Felix (2007).

Scary stuff. Wife's parents and brother are in the mandatory evacuation areas of Tampa.

Skatastrophy

Speaking of troops, a friend is in the Air Force and is stationed in Tampa these days. They got evacuation orders yesterday (or the day before) and they're leaving Tuesday.

You get what you pay for, I guess.

Overall, most respondents said that climate change sparked their concern for the well-being of future generations (68%). But less than half of all respondents (48%) said they would be willing to pay $10 a month to strengthen Florida's infrastructure to weather hazards.

Our governor turned down a couple hundred million to harden our infrastructure. But he will gladly take billions to rebuild.

Tampa's trauma center and biggest hospital being in an island at sea level seems like poor emergency planning in the grand scheme of things.

Fingers crossed it's not as bad as it currently looks like it could be.

Good friend from high school retired, bought his "dream house" in Bradenton, moved in three weeks ago...and is in the red zone for evacuation.

With all respect, we already are paying plenty. Our power bills have a fund that we pay into every month to ensure our utilities have funds to rebuild after hurricanes. Most oceanside counties have a beach replenishment tax that ensures our beaches are rebuilt after the hurricanes. And, have you read about our property casualty insurance rates?

Our infrastructure is battle hardened. Our power poles are concrete and we have the toughest building codes in the USA. Our home was built in 2007 and our windows can withstand a 160 mph impact.

Mom and her husband made the terrible decision to stay in Punta Gorda. They are about 14' above sea level and a bit inland, so probably will only get wind and rain. And, they literally just placed the last nail in their home renovation when they had substantial damage from Ian. They normally don't see the storm surge, but the Peace River could make things interesting. I told her to go to my place in New Smyrna Beach (I am in WI), won't be nearly as bad. I just don't get the stubbornness.

Indeed.  Glad to hear it.

Sending positive vibes down to your Mom. This storm definitely has my attention. I have a good deal of family and friends in SW FL and hoping everyone is safe.

That's capitalism, baby! Insurance companies don't like the situation? Just leave the state.

Thankfully the insurance companies behave totally differently with healthcare so we should abolish government controls on them like the ACA.

Sure, but I'm not sure what that has to do with public roads and bridges.
Glad that dgies has good windows, and I hope they withstand what's coming, but again, I'm not sure what that has to do with public roads and bridges. Or how that helps the millions of Floridians not in his income bracket.

Similarly with how covid actions happened, you were often able to gauge severity based on what large companies protecting their bottom line would do (aka all the tech companies going full remote early on).

If the actuaries are telling you to leave a market. It's probably a bad sign for the climate.

Tough break for Rocket Buffoon

you really are dug in here oh "gate keeper"

can't get past the paywall and not about to just because it's some garbage you put out there.  i'd rather donate my dollar(s) to hurricane people since fema is running in the red zone and hasn't received their newly printed money yet, but have to wait their turn as it seems the hierarchy goes, illegals, lebanon, ukraine...then US

Peter b is the bomb!

not sure what the tough break for me is, my place is dry in Az last I checked.  golf courses are going thru their stages of overseed and should be ready for me in about 3 weeks which is when I plan on heading down.  only thing I need to worry about are the illegals-the ones getting all the money that should have been readily available for our own poor tax paying Americans who's homes have been or will about to be washed away

for all of you Floridians, full or part time, families and friends-my prayers are with ya'll

Brother Pakuni:

I suspect you don't live in Florida. If you did, you would know that after Ian, our state government had destroyed bridges to barrier islands on the west coast rebuilt in seven days. As a resident, you also would know that public safety and our national guard were on the barrier islands and in areas hard hit almost immediately. The goal was wellness checks on our citizenry who weren't wise enough to leave.

Even our governor was a voice of reason.

We can debate whether Florida is an inviting state for those "who aren't in my income bracket", whatever you think that might be. But lets leave aspersions about recovery out of this. We are not Louisiana!
