From the WSJ:

The Tampa Bay area enjoyed increasing home values, affordability and a growing population, but higher home insurance costs and the perennial threat of storms are starting to undermine the market. Even before Helene hit, homeowners were lowering their asking prices and dealing with flooding in areas with no flood history. While home prices have been flat, the area saw a 58% increase in supply in August compared with a year ago and a 10% decrease in demand, according to real-estate data and analytics firm Parcl Labs.

Gonna have to drive down to Tampa from Maryland, to bring my mom up to stay with us for awhile while my sister's house gets gutted.  She unfortunately can't fly, so two 14 hour drives it is.

Yeah.

He told them they could leave when the parking lot started flooding.

What more do you want?

Not going to find any sympathy from us that your mom's a terrorist.

But seriously that sucks all around, safe travels reinko.

Terrorists aren't allowed on Amtrak either.

Kudos to you for helping your mother out. If you hate driving long distances as much as I do (sounds like that is the case), double kudos.

Sorry to hear this. Towards the end of her life, my mother had some problems but could still manage somewhat. I learned to steer conversations to the past where she still had very clear memories rather than the present. I'm sure you have learned to adapt as well. I believe this helps them relax, reflecting on what they know rather than getting anxious about not being able to follow a conversation in the present.

Thanks yall for the support.

Someone gave me the idea about flying into Orlando, renting a car there, drive to Tampa, then drive that back to MD.  A bit more money, but you add up gas, a hotel and food, probably a wash, plus I save a 14 hour drive.

Just don’t wanna risk trying to rent a car in TPA, my sister said rentals are hard to come by, MCO seems like a safer bet.

Any travel or logistics folks have any other ideas or thoughts?

This sounds like the best plan. As you said-probably a wash on expense, and not wearing yourself out driving 28 hours makes a whole lot of sense. I hope your mother likes dogs so that Charlie can do her part on welcoming your mother.

Sounds like a good plan. Getting out of Tampa may be the hardest part. Ordinarily you could go on  I-75 and work your East over to I-95. Check the road conditions at the time.  You may have to take I-4 and go East to I-95.

Get the full tank option when you rent the car, that way you won't have to scramble to find a gas station on the return to MCO.

I believe he's running (one way, away) from MCO  (the worst airport in the world, sorry reinko).

My parents were snowbirds in Winter Haven.
I would fly into MCO a couple times a year to visit them.
Just need to be aware of which terminal your airline is flying out of if you are departing or having someone pick you up.
The only issue I had is the rental car lines.  My parents deceased in 2018, so it has been 6 years since flying into MCO, so things may have changed.  But some of the rental car counters had lines that probably forced people to wait a couple of hours.  Don't know if they lacked cars and hence were stalling.  A couple times, although we had reservations with one company, because their line was so long, we simply went to another rental car company counter that had a shorter line.

A smaller airport near Orlando that may have flights is the Orlando/Sanford International Airport.  Maybe reduced amount of busyness that comes with larger airports.

I've taken an Uber from Tampa to Orlando once, they're quite close.

How the North Carolina Legislature Left Homes Vulnerable to Helene

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/03/climate/north-carolina-homes-helene-building-codes.html?

The amount of rain that Tropical Storm Helene unleashed over North Carolina was so intense, no amount of preparation could have entirely prevented the destruction that ensued.

But decisions made by state officials in the years leading up to Helene most likely made some of that damage worse, according to experts in building standards and disaster resilience.

Over the past 15 years, North Carolina lawmakers have rejected limits on construction on steep slopes, which might have reduced the number of homes lost to landslides; blocked a rule requiring homes to be elevated above the height of an expected flood; weakened protections for wetlands, increasing the risk of dangerous storm water runoff; and slowed the adoption of updated building codes, making it harder for the state to qualify for federal climate-resilience grants.

It is interesting that you think having a president visiting the area has more positive impact on the victims than actually providing them money.

Or enact policy that would attempt to limit disaster damage
