Indeed.   As well as scoopers around the southeast.

Passing due west of the Gulf coast of the state right now.  Heavy rains and some wind but nothing TOO crazy as of now, thankfully.  Storm surge seems to be manageable.

I was pretty sure I just heard that the east eye could see 20 feet (!) of storm surge/rain

In addition to "potentially catastrophic" winds, Helene could bring storm surge as high as 20 feet

Luckily, where it is probably going to make landfall isn't a heavy population center.

Doesn't Talahasse have a sizeable population?

Yes, but Tallahassee is pretty far inland so it won't be hit with a storm surge. The part that will be most affected by the surge may be the least populated coastline in Florida.

The breadth of Helene looks rather imposing.  But it is fortunate that the eye isn't supposed to hit a more populated area.

From a storm surge perspective, east of the eye is what catches the worst of it because that's where the winds are coming off the water.

There's like 8 feet of storm surge in St.P. Helene is jumbo sized.

I always thought "landfall" referred to when a hurricane first touches land. The meteorologist on a local station said it is when the eye of the hurricane comes over land.

This storm's impacts, man.....

Southeast is going to Helene a handbasket.

Not good.  Atlanta is flooded.  Helene doesn't seem to care about anyone or anything.  All she knows is destruction.  Be safe and stay strong.

Me too. A kinder, gentler hurricane would be much nicer than one who is "angry at the world". She's like the angry orcas and is clearly sending us a message when she sinks boats. Let's hope she is not like the moose in Alaska who have the right to kill humans without mercy.  ::)

Helene has passed through the Charlotte and Triad NC metro.
I kept power and no flooding.  Just a couple tree limbs down.
But going to Duke Energy - Power Outage Map web page, many not as lucky.

Lucky to be only on the edge of the storm's path. Lots of rain, but wind gusts only about 20-25 mph. Lost power for a couple of hours. No big deal. Feel for those in Florida and in the path North-Northwest.

Some uncharted waters as far has rainfall and wind combinations in some areas.   The one that some hopefully get a chance to tell their grandkids about.

Thanks Brother Muggsy and everyone.

We are on the east coast, lots of rain (about 4 inches), wind and misery but nothing serious. Never lost power.

Our concern goes to our fellow Floridians in the Big Bend region and to Atlanta and Nashville, where things will be pretty bad.

Less than two weeks ago, NC southern coast has 18 inches of rain.
Probably biggest storm no one has ever heard of.
