James Lankford, the primary architect of the immigration bill, is one of the most conservative voices in Congress. He was interviewed recently for an article that ran in the New York Times Magazine.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/10/magazine/james-lankford-senator-interview.html

The article included this exchange with the reporter, Lulu Garcia-Navarro:

Reporter: You seem to have won every concession from Democrats that Republicans wanted. And I'm curious now, in hindsight, why you think that's true. Do you think Democrats and the Biden administration in particular realized that they had a problem on their hands at the Southern border?

Lankford: So, yes, I believe that the administration came to the table because they understood this is spiraling out of control. And quite frankly, I think they perceived they could say, "OK, those crazy Republicans, they forced us to be able to pass this bill, so we're going to implement this," when they actually quietly wanted to say, "OK, we've got to make this stop."

Reporter: Were you optimistic that it could succeed?

Lankford: I was.

Reporter: And all signs indicated that your optimism was actually founded until Trump came out forcefully against the bill. He was basically whipping against it from Mar-a-Lago. Did he call you personally?

Lankford: We did not talk during that time period, actually. And on my part, that was intentional, because of that exact question. I didn't want this to be perceived as, this is President Trump actually trying to run this bill. That would be toxic to my Democrat colleagues. I honestly believe that exact bill would have passed in December, but by the time it got into February, it became immediately the major focus in the election, because, as you recall, the Republican primary suddenly got resolved. It looked very obvious that President Trump was going to be there, and everything collapsed at that point. If that bill would have gone in December, I think it would have passed.

Florida Man will double down on his "bad bill" bad take.

The gov't needs to order all cars to be fitted with a turret and 50 caliber machine gun for our own protection. Let's Mad Max this country.

Heck, let's think about this for a minute.

The Insane Idiots Street Gang is heavily armed already.

The old Robert Taylor Rifle Team used to practice their craft on the scoreboard at Comiskey/Guaranteed Rate/Cellular One Field.

Chicago, with strict gun laws, has some of the most heavily armed teens and young adults in the free world.

Just about every Floridian outside my house is legally armed with their concealed carry permits and their purse-sized handgun.

Sounds to me like just another piece of regulatory overkill.

The constitution GUARANTEES my rights to all of these.

F'in repressive government.

Not all scoop users are created equal apparently

It's heartwarming we are attempting to help other nations around the world embrace their god/jesus given right of being armed to the teeth at least.

And why do red states have a higher murder rate than blue states?

Awesome quote (and so true):

"Why in the world in America are you eligible to walk into a gun store and buy an AR-15 rifle? They should have a sign, 'If you need a gun for mass school shootings, here's your AR-15. We'll give you a discount.' Why don't they just put that sign up there?"

You think Ds should give up the majority, put McConnell back in charge, AND give up all committee chairmanships voluntarily.

Hate to break it to you, donuts, but most Biden appointed judges would not even get a vote.

No, I think they should actually legislate for their constituency you lizard brained dumbass.

Why do you think this is?

Because we Americans love our guns.

Love 'em more than life itself.

They are an extension of our male sex organs -- and you know how much we just love to use those!!!!!!!
