Holy crap, that weather that blew through Chicago last night! Seven active tornados at one point. I hope everyone here is safe.

The thunderstorms the past three nights have all been notably intense. Thankfully, the rest of the week should be more temperate.

If you were in Chicago last night, you were advised to seek shelter at Soldier Field, where was no chance of a touchdown there.  ;D

Was at Alpine Valley Saturday night, video screens blowing over us in the crowd, pouring rains, body shaking thunder, lightening lighting up the sky, a bolt hit the light post near us in the lot, blew up and lit the sky like the Fourth of July. Crazy stuff, too bad the show is rescheduled

Do I need to change this to a weather free zone?

We had an EF1 pass about three miles from the house last night.

I was in the basement and not on the driveway watching it all unfold.

Ope.  Not a true midwesterner there.

Did that last August.   Were you out on the porch watching?

Usually I would be but the wife doesn't like when I do that.

I was on my rooftop deck watching the front come into the city around 10pm and the temp dropped from 90F to 70F in a blink. I went back inside immediately.

Sunday evening I was in a parking structure leaving the west Loop when my phone blew up and sirens went off, we sheltered in the stairwell of the building for a bit, an EF0 went over Bronzeville.
Last night phone blew up, etc three of us neighbors were texting each other, all in our basements, WGN literally announced our neighborhood as being in the path of one of the suspected tornadoes, but it died out before getting to us.  Street flooded from the rain.
I’ve somehow discovered a FB page/group  called Illinois Storm Chasers, first during the northern lights when there was that big display, but holy cow the pictures people are posting of the damage!

There nothing more apocalyptic than when you are with a bunch of people and the cell phone emergency chyron is blaring at the same time from every cell phone around you.

I remember how crazy some of the storms could be.  Living in "downtown" Chicago, you never worried about an actual tornado ripping through cause, you know, meterology, but hearing storm sirens echoing amongst the highrises is surreal.

Moving to Florida has been amusing.  Obviously hurricanes are a worry, but otherwise you get these fast moving gnarly thunderstorms that blow through.  Loud, tons of rain, big lightning, but the wind is relatively mild.  My wife gets a bit jumpy whereas it doesn't phase me in the least.  We joke that its obvious who grew up in the Midwest with a dad who used to go out on the deck to watch big storms roll in and stopped being freaked out by storm sirens in grade school...and who grew up on Long Island.

I felt the same vibe at a work meeting today. I realized that spending an evening in a closet/bathroom/basement a few times a summer is not a normal experience for people in other parts of the United States. I had never thought about it before.

Here's to hoping scoopers do not need to spend any more time than is necessary in the closet.

Yea i think its the difference living in a place that isn't in imminent danger of F5s ripping through like Oklahoma or the Plains, but still having plenty of watches and warnings.  Tornadoes obviously touched down a bunch in Dodge/Jefferson/Walworth counties and such, but growing up in counties along the lake (same for my friends that grew up in Chicago suburbs), you would get watches and warnings, but I can't remember more than a handful in my childhood ever being within like 10 miles of my house

Our last few years in Chicago, we lived on the 17th floor of a big, ol', Wirtz-owned building on Sheridan, just off Lake Michigan. We'd see the storms a-whippin' off the lake and through the park and some were a wonder to behold.

Can't remember the exact year but maybe 2008? ... there were tornado warnings in the city, and the tone was, "We're serious this time!" We went down to the first floor on our way to the basement and I decided to poke my head out the door. I have never seen the sky that color in Chicago before, and it felt like 50 mph winds, minimum. After that, my wife, son and I went to the basement as we were told! About a half-hour later, the storm had passed.

IIRC, it turned out there were a couple of tornadoes in the city during that storm, but none where we were - just damaging winds and flooding rains. Scared the shyte outta us, though!

2020, someone mentioned it in our neighborhood FB group this morning. I live about two miles directly south of where that one hit. I was in my basement that day as well…
I am reading about flooding caused by the dam failure in Nashville, Illinois. I watched the total eclipse this past April from a park there. So awful.

I watched both storms from the ninth floor condo we rent at Broadway and Surf. Lots of wind, rain and one downed tree but nothing severe.

Biggest problem was a downed tree blocking North Broadway Monday morning. Otherwise we were fine.

I hope you've had a chance to try Gundis around the corner from you, it's extremely good.

Thanks for the heads up. It’s across from my barber (which is quite a cultural experience going there) and I’ve walked by it a lot but never gone in. I’ll give it a try before we go back to the land of gators and goofballs!
