The Equalizer

Quote from: Billy Hoyle on March 11, 2025, 02:49:27 PMThe Portal does not open until March 24. Players can announce they are going in (North Dakota's stud who dropped 40 on Alabama announced his intent to enter) but as of now, nobody is officially in the Portal.

There are some exceptions.

Anyone who is (or expects to be) a graduate transfer can enter now.

In addition, the portal opens for 30 days starting the day a coach leaves, so some of these mid-season or early coach departures give some players a head start. For example, Virgina players could enter the portal way back in October after Tony Bennett left--they didn't have to wait until March 24.

Pretty safe bet, Sean knows Shaka is leaving

Yep. And it's hard to imagine that Sean doesn't see himself as the top-minute PG for Marquette I'm 2025-26. Also hard to imagine that Shaka told him anything differently.

I would hate to see Sean transfer since he seems like a nice young man and can probably be a good player. Seems odd that he would leave Shaka, especially after the surgery, rehab, and Shaka allowing him to come back at his own pace. But, if some other school is willing to give him a big payday and that is his priority, so be it. MU is bound to lose a player to the portal every now and then.

Anything's possible but this seems like nonsense.  Also, excited about Sean but I don't see how any school would offer him a big pay day based on his limited production and the fact that he's coming off major surgery and won't have played a game in almost 2 years by the time November rolls around.

This is by far the best answer I have seen yet. Kudos!

Let us hypothesize, for the sake of argument, that there are wholesale departures and Shaka has to hit the portal.   Would that make you more optimistic about next season?   Would you rather have random players from random colleges instead of the players already on the roster?   Having eschewed the portal for years and announced that players coming to MU don't need agents, do you think that Shaka will now be able to assemble through the portal a worthy team?
Do you think the team would be improved by a Carlino, a Reinhardt, a McEwen, a Carton, a Jayce Johnson?

Depends on who those players are and their skills. And dealing with player agents is now part of the college landscape. I understand Shaka not wanting to deal and negotiate with agents. Who the hell would want to, except maybe Pitino? Dont like the way this crap is going in college basketball, but if you do not change with the landscape, it just might pass you by.

Sean was the most engaged and energetic guy on the bench at MSG. Hardly a sign of a dude leaving. He and his Mom love Shaka and the program. I call BS on the rumors. Sean will be a key player next season.

While I generally will take a "I'll believe it when it actually happens" view with a rumored Jones transfer, I beg people not to take bench energy as some sort of proof.

Sean is a member of the team. He cares about his teammates. Of course he is going to be high energy.

Ya know, of all the players I listed, he was the one that I paused on.  I am not sure he would have been able to play defense for Shaka or handle the ball out top before rolling to the basket, but yeah.

I think next year is an opportunity for a transfer big,  without upsetting the apple cart. Allows Josh and Caedin and Al to all play(under 10 minutes) without counting on their production. It allows Ben and Royce to play in their more natural roles.
However, I would show loyalty and ask Royce his thoughts on it. I wouldn't take any big if it potentially upsets Royce.
Plenty on here may disagree and think that's inmates running the asylum mentality.......I think it strengthens Shaka approach to RGV.

tower912

I think Ben stays at the 5 and Royce moves into the Joplin 4 role.  I think Clark and Caedin can combine to give Jayce Johnson presence next season.  It was never about production with JJ, as that was was disappointing.   It was about giving physical minutes.
