Sixteen teams with two automatic entries from each of the Big East, Big 10 and Big 12.

LOS ANGELES -- Fox Sports and AEG will launch a new postseason college basketball tournament next year.

The College Basketball Crown will be a 16-team tournament taking place March 31 through April 6, 2025, in Las Vegas. The games will be played at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena. Both venues have hosted college basketball games in the past, including the Pac-12 tournaments.

Teams that do not qualify for the NCAA tournament will be eligible. The Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East -- whose games are carried on Fox -- will each have two automatic entries. The other teams will be selected by a committee.

Why is this a thing?

Are teams just gonna turn this down like the NIT?

I bet they make this a part of our next contract with fox sports, if that's the way the contract goes. 1 year left on that deal with Fox/CBS so we'll see soon enough.

Rick Pitino isn't turning down a free week in Vegas.

So this thing isn't even going to start until the regional finals are done and will conclude the day between the national semifinals and the final?

So they're expecting teams to stick around and practice for two additional weeks, even though the transfer portal will presumably open, so they can play in this tournament?

That doesn't seem like it will work.

Good points. But I have to believe the NCAA will adjust the portal window due to 1. common sense, 2. coaches' complaints and 3. media and public reaction to the current calendar.

Actually, strike "1. common sense". Replace with Big East, Big 12 and Big 10 telling the NCAA to adjust the portal window.

Don't think the NCAA could care less what the Big 12 and Big East think.

Ha! True. But would you agree they still have more impact than common sense at the NCAA?

I doubt they made this tournament before contacting the leagues, and determining what financial compensation they need to make it happen.

Half of the players will be in the portal before this thing even starts. This will never work.

As we're often reminded, the NCAA is made up of its member institutions, including those from the Big 12 and Big East.
