Georgetown and DePaul
« on: March 17, 2024, 05:42:48 PM »
Direct a lot of the ire for burst bubbles on those two teams being absolute anchors on the Big East.

The good news is, the tournament will expand to 80 or 96 next year, so that should help

Yep this. Would never happen, but this is an argument for removing DePaul from the BigEast. I know they made a good hire, but they cost the BE a few bids this year.

I said this in a different thread earlier last week...

A LOT of our middle teams were buoyed by 4 wins over DePaul & Georgetown.  Hopefully Holtman fixes this.  I am really surprised on how bad Cooley was in year 1.  Punting on a season in this era is embarassing.

Punting on a season in a league he’s coached in for over a decade is a disgrace.

Seton Hall:

1-4 vs high major teams in nonconference.  That put them dangerously close to the bubble.  Then a high number of bid stealers knocked them out.

St. John's:

Very bland résumé with only 1 noteworthy win over Creighton.

Villanova:

0-3 in Big Five games, 1 point loss to UConn, 2 point loss Creighton, OT loss to Marquette.

Providence:

Too many Q4 games plus the Hopkins injury limited their ceiling.  Losing record without Hopkins.

Xavier:

Injuries to Hunter and Freemantle derailed their tourney Hope's before the season either began.

Butler:

Abysmal 3-8 record vs 2nd tier BE teams.  Needed a few more of those wins.

Nobody stole the autobid, like the ACC and Pac 12 had.

It was the (im)perfect storm for a 3 bid BE.  A combination of bad luck (injuries, bid thieves) and underperformance (either non-con, top of BE, or middle of BE).

If we could replay the entire season again, with a handful of things breaking differently, and we're talking about 5-6 bids instead.

Could even say, if we could replay the last week, we're talking about 5 bids?

Mountain West got 6 teams in and they had to play
Air Force 2-16 9-22 KP 260
SJSU 2-16 9-23 KP 248
Fresno State 4-14 12-21 KP 237

Those aren’t far from DePaul 307 and Georgetown 202.

KenPom had MWC as #7 while BE as #2.

The issue lies with each of the teams own performance.
Seton Hall played a very weak non-conf schedule and lost to USC, Baylor, Iowa and Rutgers. Their best wins are UConn and Marq at home when MU lost their 6th man.

St John’s had a mediocre non-conf SOS but lost to Michigan, Dayton and BC. Dayton being the only tourney team in the mix. Their best win was Utah. In conference they have 1 win against a tourney team and then 2 wins over Nova and 1 Seton Hall in the BET.

Nova had great non-conf wins over UNC, Texas Tech and Memphis but followed those up with losses at home to St Joseph’s, Drexel, and at Kansas State. In conf, good wins at Creighton and against Providence but not much else.

Providence played poor non-conf with only a win against Wisco to show for it. They played one road game in non-conf against Oklahoma and lost. They lost their other neutral court against Kansas State.  Their conf away record isn’t great with their best wins against Xavier and Seton Hall but they lost to both of them at home.  They beat Creighton in the BET as their only other good win away from home.

None of these resumes say they deserved to get in and when there was a good number of bid stealing they missed out.

DePaul and Georgetown suck but they aren’t the reason those teams didn’t get in.

Ultimately teams are responsible for their résumé's by beating teams they are supposed to beat, scheduling a good noncon and beating decent and good teams. Effin pervert Pitino can go F himself.
Goal is National Championship

All of this. When Kim English, Rick Pitino, and the rest of the Big East whiners go on their selection rants, I hope they're looking into mirrors because they are the reason they didn't make the tournament. It's not DePaul or Georgetown, it's not the Selection Committee, it's their own scheduling and performance against those schedules.

Thank you Brother Newsdude!

In the years we ended up on the outside looking in (which hopefully will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN), it was easy to point to teams that made the tournament and muse how much better we were. An honest assessment also would look at games we could and should have won but didn't.

Or eating too many cupcakes in the pre-season.

Ultimately, the wannabes but weren'ts in our conference controlled their own destiny. A couple of timely wins and they'd be ins!
