Geez, didn't need to be this close.

That's all. Probably didn't need a whole thread for this, but channeling my inner Muggsy.

Kolek misses 2, Joplin front end miss, and Kolek front end miss. Going 0-6 from the line in crunch time. Brutal and extremely fortunate to somehow win.

I'm thinking the team was exhausted at the end and it impacted the free throws.

Yes fatigue was a factor. But the pressure of the moment a factor as well. That's concerning come March.

Was surprised Kolek missed. Had zero confidence in Joplin making them.

Think Tyko was gassed.

Agree. Down 1 with no time remaining and Kolek at the line for 2 shots, I still like our chances with that going forward. Unfortunately the only player on the team I feel that way about though.

I don't know ...a week or two ago some Scoopers were arguing that Shaka should never use the bench.

Probably woulda won the game at SH if he didn't, just like he won the game at StJ.

The injuries made the decision for him.

Hopefully he gets the others a ton of run at DePaul and all home games where Marquette takes a comfortable lead

I think mostly fatigue.   They were  burning  energy on defense the entire game, and they were tired.   You can see them in the TO huddles breathing deeply.   Don't think for Kolek it was pressure.   Maybe Jop but not sure even there.  They were gassed.   Kolek played 39 minutes

Judge Smails

Daniel, I wish it were just that they were fatigued. These guys are in great shape.  A 92% free throw shooter doesn't miss 3 in a row unless the pressure is getting to him a bit. TK has closed out games at the FT line before and he'll get other chances this season. Hopefully he can put today's FTs out of his mind and come through in the clutch next time.

You might be right.... But he has done it before and pressure did not get to him.   He might be in a funk but seemed to step out of it this game.   Who knows!   Only Tyler

Judge

In your opinion, TK choked?

Judge Smails

On this occasion, yes. He has come through in the clutch in the past. And he had a very good game today besides the missed FTs at the end. But as the team leader and primary ball handler, he has to knock those down at the end of the game. Very fortunate that he missed 3 and we escaped with a W. Hope he gets the chance again to close out a game at the FT line and pulls through next time.

I know this is a FT thread and not a Kolek Thread, but I'll chime in. The labels "All American", "Best Backcourt in the Country", "Best guard in the Country", yada yada....just aren't true. We know this because of what we see on the court. He's a good player. Glad he's on MUs team, better than most. But I think those labels damaged his game because he drank the Koolaid.

Disagree.

He had a shooting slump. He didn't become a bum. He's averaging 14 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds for a top-15 team (looking to tomorrow's rankings) despite almost every defense MU plays being geared to stop him from going where he likes to go on the court.

Please offer evidence that he missed those FTs yesterday or that he shot poorly from 3 for a stretch because he drank the Kool-Aid.

He is clearly one of the best guards in the country. His game is pretty much what it was last year. The only change being worse from distance, but he has made up for that being way better at the rim - his EFG at this point is higher than last year.

I'm waiting for someone to post that he is a cancer on this team.

Yeah this is one of those times where people are wearing rose colored glasses on what he did last year, and are disappointed when he isn't performing to THEIR expectations versus what he actually accomplished.

I have one gripe with TK, quit the whining to the refs and get back on defense. Other than that, he is the best player on a very good team and one of the best PG in the country. He has run one of the most beautiful offenses that I have ever seen at MU for 1.5 years and has made it look easy. When this offense is humming it is a true joy to watch, imo.

I was thinking last night, there definitely are a lot more fans watching the games closer, and everyone has an opinion. I do not know nearly enough to break down this team on every possession of every game, but do not enough to know that their good play is really, really good. I hope they continue to do exactly what they are doing and hopefully the shots start to fall on a more regular basis.

All true. However, his eFG% is down from 54.1 total season to 42.9 in conference while his assist rate is up to an incredible 42.8 in conference.

With all that, the Big East's finest have lowered his conference free throw rate from 37.3 a year ago to 27.4. Is he pressing? Yes. But are other conference teams bully balling him? Yes, and McDermott called the BE officials out yesterday's

Teams adjusted and are purely focused on muscling him. Tyler's response is press harder which may add to his woes but it's not NIL related. His teammates need to hit shots (and they are open) and/or the MU coaches need to counter to open up the offensive efficiency to what we are used to.

A slumpbuster is up next.
