Clearly Marquette's relationships were inferior yesterday and the cause of our defeat.  Several group dinners at Miss Katie's Diner are in order this week to help the team turn it around while cajoling and beefing up their relationships.  Apparently Greg Gard knew relationships were the key to the game and treated his team to a night of shots and beers at the Nitty Gritty instead of practicing.

In Shaka's world, the above is constantly said with a straight face as he actually believes some of the silly things he says about relationships.  The players, in turn, also echo relationships like robots mentioning them early and often in every interview.  Apparently Shaq and Kobe never got the relationships memo as they won three championships while hating each other.

All of this relationships talk is cute and harmless until total debacles like yesterday unfold.  Worse yet, they unfold for the third year in a row in spite of having a roster of NBA prospects on each team.  So did Marquette come out totally unprepared because our relationships weren't strong, or was it because Shaka and his staff stink at strategy and game-planning?  Buzz was smart enough to hire a former head coach on each of his staff's who would help with game planning and to whisper things in his ear during games that he might be missing. Shaka, in turn, has hired a bunch of young, rah-rah type of chest bumpers who collectively are never mentioned with any new head coaching openings.  I will admit, however, I think his staff are the best recruiters in the country as far as identifying talent with high upsides.

Add the above to the fact that Shaka, in the attached video, was visibly uncomfortable with questions about the game/rivalry and worked vehemently to downplay the importance of it all.  It was like he knew what was coming and/or didn't want to disrupt the state and media's established pecking order that the Badgers are the loved kings of the state and Marquette and their alumni are annoying nuisances.  So fights and F bombs are apparently only reserved for his old nemesis Kansas/Bill Selfish, while placid Shaka comes out for any game against the Badgers.

So all of the above created yesterday's perfect storm where an inferior team beat our pants off.  It was so bad, in fact, that we never once had a lead and were even down by 16 at one point.  The board's constant warnings to the players to come out fighting to avoid humiliating chants of "over-rated" and court stormings were unheard as even Oso and Kolek both looked like they forgot to set their alarms.

The good news is we'll beat St. Thomas, Notre Dame and DePaul twice.  Every other game is in question here on out, Saturday proved we are definitely not the tough minded Top 5 team we hoped we were.

Watch Shaka's presser.   He is unhappy with his team.

duanewade: I can't imagine anyone identifying what happened yesterday better than you did. And what the image the program likes to portray.  I like the way you may have poked your elbow in me. Because I remember team breakfasts and dinners at Miss Katie's. It was years ago. But yet, I get tired of hearing about team culture and connectedivness? See I can't even spell it let alone how such a thing can be a new approach to basketball. At any level. I like the way Smart has recruited. Athletes with upside. The future is bright in that regard. Yet, I would like to see MU recruit a 6'7 guy who's a little over weight like 265 and a guy who will push butt. His nickname would be "Meat". and he would play like Jae or Theo. Just an idea.

Anyway, I think Shaka admitted in the post game press conference yesterday that some players were not playing up to their abilities. Finally. Scrape off some of the makeup. Break it down and get down to who is able enough and determined enough to do what the team did last year. Only better. You can't lose to Wisconsin and you can't lose to Michigan State.

It will all come down to the three and we know who they are. And the triangle. And some shots from the other guys when the offense is clicking or  the clock is winding down. If i pass the ball to you take a good shot or pass it up. Don't play hero ball. Grit and determination. It's a simple game.

Man a loss to the Badgers brings out an extra level of crazy around here.

I had really hoped that the overall mindset in scoop had turned the corner a year or so again. I am as vested as any fan this season and the loss is quickly becoming a distant memory.

In thinking back on last season, the MSU loss is top of the list and the rest not as much. I remember they lost at UConn and X and cannot remember the other BE loss. In addition, I do remember they lost to UW and Miss. State but no idea on other losses. Point is, it is very long season and March is important part of the season.

Yup. Like I said heading into the game, this game sucks to lose the day of and maybe a couple days after. But come
Tuesday it won't even have been the biggest game we've played in 5 days.

We'll be just fine. There's no reason to be thinking Shaka needs to change his philosophy because of 40 minutes of bad basketball. Or that some unknown freshman should be playing more minutes than last year's BE 6MOY. We're 6-2 with wins at IL, neutrals over Kansas and UCLA, and a 3 point neutral loss to Purdue when our 2nd best player missed a lot of time with foul trouble. And coming off a year we went 29-7 and won the BE regular season and tournament titles.

The idea that it's a "problem" Shaka is 0-3 against UW is wild. Shaka took a dead program and had turned it into a national title contender by year 2. And it looks like he has a program ready to compete at this level for the long run. College teams lose to worse teams a lot. It happens. Sucks when it does and more so when it's a rival. But enjoy the ride.

Shaka didn't forget how to coach nor did the players forget how to play yesterday.    We had a bad game.   Happens.

Wednesday we have a great opportunity and need to take care of business.

Year 1 UW: Loss at Madison to a better UW team
Year 2 UW: Loss in OT to an even team
Year 3 UW: Loss at Madison to a slightly weaker team.

Life goes on. MU will be better team in March because MU has better players.

agreed. (Last season UW was a bottom feeder BIG team/NIT. MU should have won that game at FF. This season, if a legit #3, we need to come out, assert ourselves and take the game.)

I mean, maybe you can't spell it and can't form proper sentences because you're just dumb. Occam's Razor being what it is....

Not sure what your point is. Too many words. Marquette is clearly the better team. badges are slow and not fun to watch. Hope Marquette kills them in the post season.
