They tried that ... the winning league got home-field in the World Series. But the human outcry was so great they stopped that.

So, if not this, then what?

Really - have any other breaking news from the early 2000’s ?

This year’s game was very good and competitive.  The players still play like they care. It’s the only all star game that isn’t a farce (I honestly don’t know about hockey as I don’t follow the NHL). Leave it be. It’s an all star game for crying out loud.  It’s held once a year.  It’s not hurting the overall sport or fan interest in the least.  Meaning or stakes doesn’t have to be attached to everything. I really don’t get some of the hand wringing.

Exactly. Those who care about it have something to watch. Those who don't can watch one of the 8,663 other programs on TV.
