What bar have you had the most drinks at?
« on: April 30, 2023, 07:48:46 PM »
Was chatting with another alum. Talking about where we’ve drank the most. We said that could really mean two things. One bar where most drinks consumed or most times visiting a bar.
Since college, I had moved every few years for the first couple of decades. So for the longest time, a Marquette bar, likely The Gym, would have probably been the leader on both accounts. It was an 18 drinking age so 4 years of drinking there.
Last couple of decades, lived in South Florida, but places come and go fairly often and living in suburbia don’t hammer drinks like I used to. No local to hang out in. So maybe the leader is still The Gym.
But no clear one stands out on either account. Number of visits maybe The Square Grouper of It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere video fame. Number of drinks? Our local brewery Civil Society.

Where’s yours and how long did it take not to be a Marquette bar?

Murphs and murphs for me.

Don't know if that record will ever be exceeded.

Hegarty's and the Gym.  Nothing comes close.

Post college, The Intersection (original location) took a lot of my money until I got married.   Far behind MU bars, though.

Jean’s, the old hangout back in the day by the criminal courthouse at 26th and California in Chicago. I spent many more years working there than I did attending Marquette, so it would easily beat out the Gym.

The Gym in my early 20's would have been usurped in my late 20's by the Satu Lagi bar in Jakarta.  It was one of the main expat hangouts and always had lots of ice cold Anker bottles.  Tourists drink Bintang.  "Locals" drink Anker.

In Milwaukee it would be the Avalanche, O'Donaghue's and the Ardmore.  I did go to the Gym & Hegarty's just not as often.

Post-Marquette I was on a regular bender for a few year's in New Haven, CT visiting's Bopper's (now long closed), Toad's Place, The Bar and Christopher Martin's.

Harp & Shamrock and State House in Milwaukee.

Carolina Beer Temple otherwise.

It would be a close race for top of the list.

The Gym Bar, followed by a neighborhood bar in Wauwatosa, which is now closed.

Ardmore.

Goose - what was the Tosa bar that is now closed?  I've had quite a few beers at the Club Tap.

Probably Walter's. Should be reopening relatively soon with the new ownership.

Sir

Yes, The Knotty Pine is likely #2 on my list.

MU1in77
Club Tap has been a favorite place over the years but have been there very little over the past 7-8 years.

MUfan12
Liked Walters a lot, but never went there on a regular basis. That was our meeting spot when we went to home Packer games at County Stadium. Probably have not been there 3-4 times in last twenty years, but a great Tosa bar, IMO.

I have lived in Tosa for 30 years. Partial to Leff's Lucky Town and Colonel Hart's, both in the Village. For you really old timers, Hart's used to be known as Peps Place.

Big fan of Col Harts and Leff's. Not uncommon to see my one of those two locations on a Monday after work. Have family dinner at my mother in laws every Monday night and both are within walking distance of her. As for Pep's Place, Pep was one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. Col Harts has not spent one dime in the place in 30+ years and I love it.

I live 5 blocks from Hart's and 6 blocks from Leffs. I walk to both, which allows me to stay longer, since I don't have to worry about driving. I don't know how you feel, but the Wauwatosa Village is one of the hidden gems in all of Milwaukee County, especially in the nice weather.

Totally agree--I live close to Club Tap, but I like Colonel Hart's and Leff's too.  My current favorite Tosa bar is Lucky Joe's.

For all time, I'm pretty sure the now-defunct Mariah's on 89th and National in West Allis has served me the most drinks in my life.  Besides working there from 1981-1984, my friends and I hung out there all throughout the 1980s, they sponsored our softball teams (some seasons it was multiple weeknights), and we drank A LOT of volume there.  The low prices and drink specials didn't hurt.  At one point during the '80s we roughly calculated that our group of friends had to have spent over $25,000 there in a 5-year span (at '80s prices--50 cent beers with nightly 2-for-1 specials, quarter drink nights, $5 pitchers, $2 shots, etc).  During college we would often start a night at Mariah's for the specials and then head down to the MU or East Side bars for the later night fun.
