I don't think we have a clear picture of exactly what these CEO's envision or want to do.... or if it's too late.  I do think they fear more litigation and this is part of wanting regulations.  They've known about this for several years.  It's hard for me to believe this is some sort of epiphany because of the recent hack or how fast things are moving.

Sure, foreign LLMs are concerning.  That being said .. I am entirely not concerned about some company (or country) "winning" the AI race.  I think that's a bogus concept, that there'll be some moment and some winner, with AGI or ASI.

Right now, the models are AMAZING and are more knowledgeable than 98% of all humans.  Sure, the last 2% will be amazing.  But it's not like all the other LLMs become losers and quit the race.

Quote from: Uncle Rico on September 16, 2026, 06:10:06 AMYeah, regulating AI would hurt billionaires ability to make more money.  I suggest we train an elite squad of mercenaries to take out AI should it get dangerous and show no mercy and usurp the oil

No tactical nukes?

Disappointing.

I'm assuming AI will have control of them.  If we get some beekeeper type mercenaries, that should be all we need

Unless you've gone through extra steps to enable that, it does not.  Alexa uses Nova (Amazon's own agent) and Claude (Anthropic).

Stop worrying about the Chinese boogeyman.

I keep hearing "China regulates AI more than we do" but I'm not sure that's factual.

TLDR, though, there's probably 20 companies (or 200) working on developing AI models, and another 20,000 enthusiasts.   Regulation only occurs when those models get *released* for general use.  Research and innovation will likely go unabated everywhere.

An M.I.T. Report Warns A.I. Is Causing 'Cognitive Surrender.' Universities Are in a Bind.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/15/us/universities-ai-warnings-enthusiasm.html?

The worries that artificial intelligence is degrading education have been building for months. Students are using it for everything, including cheating, and a recent report out of M.I.T. said it is triggering "cognitive surrender."

Many university leaders are embracing A.I. with enthusiasm anyway.

As A.I. leaders warn about the dangers of their own technology, the dissonance between the optimism of university leaders and the fears of many students and professors may increase. Professors and students are often in a bind about what they should do: Use more A.I. to stay relevant, or dial back to preserve learning and thinking?

While some politicians and A.I. leaders are warning about possible doomsday scenarios for humanity as A.I. models advance, many campus leaders are focused on the existential threat the technology poses to universities.

Colleges and universities have to prepare students for the world they will enter after graduation. AI is part of that world.

College instructors can't simply teach the way they have in the past. They have to adjust to a world where AI exists. You can't simply say "if you use AI you are a cheater." That's not going to work.

Yes and no.  The point of school is to learn.  Using AI to more quickly find sources and properly cite them is fine.  Using it to write your papers and do your work should, of course, be banned.

So maybe "write a paper on this topic and turn it in next month" isn't the way assignments should be made any longer.

I think the process is the important part.  If you're arguing different and AI is just going to run everyone out of the job market anyway then we should probably start dissolving colleges right this minute.

Ive held the thought for awhile, but subsequent experiences seem to cement it...at this point, AI isn't a substitute for creativity, but it is a creativity aide.

I have a colleague who just created an AI CAD platform for jewelery design.  You take a picture of a ring/earrings/necklace/pendant and it will reverse engineer a full 3D CAD image of the piece.  Its brilliant and elegant and gives a basis to build and innovate design.

Same with vibe coding.  You still need an idea, and a vision, and a blueprint, it just helps IMMENSELY in getting you to that vision and removing roadblocks.

AI will save mankind.

AI will help some professions and businesses; it will hurt some others. It will cost some people jobs; it will help others get or keep jobs.

That's unless it kills us all first, of course.

So in other words....just like any innovation since time began.

Absolutely. And here's more "Good AI stuff," from Axios:

Practical applications of AI that keep people alive, safe and protected from scams help break through Americans' skepticism of the technology, Axios' Herb Scribner writes from a Morning Consult poll taken for Axios.

Trust in AI jumped 14 points — from 41% to 55% — for these cases:

🪖 Helping others: A Veterans Affairs tool flagged more than 130,000 at-risk veterans and helped connect them to care.
💳 Fraud detection: An AI fraud-detection system flagged suspicious transactions quickly before any money was removed from an account.
💊 Cancer discovery: A Mayo Clinic AI tool spotted pancreatic cancer on CT scans up to three years before any diagnosis.
🌪 Disaster relief: A tool called "GraphCast" was used to show how early warnings for hurricanes, floods and extreme heat can be detected.
🚒 Curbing fatal illness: An AI system at Johns Hopkins cut sepsis deaths by about 20% by flagging warning signs hours in advance.

Why? AI writes me plenty of papers in the workforce.
