Just heard a nightmarish stat on ESPN that I probably shouldn't post here, but it definitely goes to showing the importance of game #1.

It's honestly a stat that is pretty unbelievable.

According to ESPN:
—18 of 34 teams that started the season UR and finished in AP top 10 and got a 1 or 2 seed didn't make it out of first weekend.
—14 of the 22 two seeds didn't get to the sweet 16.

BOTH Marquette and Purdue started UR and are in the top 10.

I know folks don't like the cliche, but gotta concentrate on that first game.

Let's beat down Vermont.
We can't be responsible for how stupid the basketball analysts were at the beginning of the season. This stat is like saying "this is the first time an nfl team has won a playoff game on the road on a Saturday when the high temp was below 40 degrees." Not too meaningful to a particular team, like Marquette, for example.

I think COLE is the response you are looking for.

I mean just because Marquette fans don't want to hear it, it doesn't mean it isn't true.

I for one hope Shaka knows it and uses it as motivation

You should email Shaka to make sure he doesn't miss this incredible motivation factor.

Some other interesting stats/facts:

++ Marquette had never won 15+ Big East games in a season.

++ Marquette had never won the Big East conference title outright.

++ Marquette had never made it to the title game of the Big East tournament.

++ Marquette had never won the Big East tournament championship.

++ Big East coaches said Marquette was going to finish in 9th place.

So, above all else, let's make sure we look at some obscure data ESPN dug up that means absolutely nothing to our team or to our situation, and let's worry endlessly about it.

Because a few months ago all the facts indicated we had absolutely no chance to accomplish anything in the Big East this season. No chance at all. And that stuff proved to be an accurate indicator of what would happen, right?

DoctorV

Sounds like you are more worried about it than I am MU82.

Absurd stats are considered absurd for a reason.

Time to make it 14 of the 23 two seeds to not advance to the Sweet 16 aina?

MU82

Yeah, I'm so worried about it that I believe we're gonna win the national title. You?

I was one of the first to predict Marquette would win the Big East, that was correct.

I also was one of the first to predict Marquette would get a 2 seed, and was very vocal about it, also correct.

I believe that we will beat Vermont, but haven't done a dive into the entire path yet so I won't predict there.

It was a staggering statistic that is honestly one of the craziest pieces of sports data I've ever heard, so I figured it was worth posting.
Pretty hard data point to even wrap one's mind around.

Lets win game 1

Thanks for posting that and it's interesting to know. That stat is a little odd though and makes me think they were querying for an anomaly like that to share.

You and I are allowed to think past game 1.

We Are Champions.

We Are Marquette.

Win Game 1.

The biggest game of Coach Shaka's, and TyKo's, and Kam's, and Oso's and every current Marquette players tenure is next Thursday or Friday's game.

Celebrate being Champions, that is now and forever in the history of Marquette folklore.

Then turn the attention to the ultimate prize.
Please win game one, it's been a decade.
Coach, team, and the entirety of Marquette nation all need it badly.

Bring on the Big Dance

IMO, the biggest game was Thursday's game vs St John's. That gave them the confidence to make a run in the Bet and now the Big Dance

It doesn't surprise me, most of those teams probably overachieved relative to their team talent, I'd say that makes a 'win or go home' upset more likely.  That said I don't think MU overachieved, they just got so much development from a youthful team over the offseason that shocked most of the prognosticators.
