Other than basketball, I really know very little about SJU. But, you have to wonder what kind of institution it is if they hire Pitino. The guy is a total sleaze. As I remember, Kentucky got caught sending an Fed Ex envelope full of cash to a recruit while he was there. Then, the whole affair with the strippers and prostitutes at Louisville was truly embarrassing for the school. I agree that he is a hell of a coach, but how much is a school supposed to lower itself just to win basketball games? To compare Pitino to Al is ridiculous.

I think the comparison to Al is completely real. I get why many dislike Rick, but there were a lot of folks that did not like Al. Actually, there were a lot of people, outside of MU, that hated Al. Different era back then, but my educated guess says Al maybe ventured in the grey area of things during his time at MU.

Big East is down a little since Wright left.  Pitino would probably bring St. John's to prominence with that NY recruiting ground.

I admit that, like most MU fans, my view of Al is biased. I realize he was no saint and he probably did bend the rules every now and then. But, Pitino not only bent the rules, but he completely embarrassed U of L in the process. Al may have had his faults, and you would certainly know more about that than anyone else here. But, he never embarrassed MU and, in fact, for ten years, virtually made Marquette a household name. I know at least one kid from a small town in Kentucky who would have never applied to MU in those days if it had not been for Al and MU basketball.  Surely there were people outside of MU (and maybe within MU) who did not like Al. After all, he had that brash NY personality and success to go with it. But, he left MU a better place than when he arrived in terms of national recognition. Pitino got a lot of recognition at Kentucky and Louisville too, but for all the wrong reeasons.

Al made MU proud and Rick has failed in that comparison in a big way. But, I cannot help seeing Al every time I see Rick coach a game. To me, he is closest anyone every came to reminding me of Al.

I think Louisville would've loved to go back and not fire Rick. I think they'd take him back in a heartbeat if he was a decade younger, even if his past had not changed.

The fact that "Rick Pitino is slimey/a cheater/(insert negative comment on him as a coach)" quickly devolves into jokes about a consensual affair that came to light cause he was being extorted says a lot, especially when it's paired with evidence of him cheating at Kentucky....done by the prior coach that he was tasked with fixing.

He didn't leave UK with a negative national reputation. He left as a god after 2 E8, 3 FF, a runner up and a Natty...in 6 years.  The only negative thing he ever did to UK was going to UL
