[Paint Touches] What does MU's Synergy Shot Quality tell us?
« on: January 06, 2023, 11:26:19 AM »
Synergy rolled out a new Shot Quality feature, so you know I had to take it for a test drive.

Also, I know the word growth is self evident at this point, but I though this table highlighted the YoY skill increase from the returners better than anything I've seen so far.

Without being a big data guy, this is an awesome way to see growth. You allude to usage, and I wonder if there is a way to integrate change in usage into the calculation. That is, if someone like Omax has a significantly higher usage than last year, is his +0.20 change more "impactful" than even Tyler's +0.24 change?

Also, why aren't there 2021-22 numbers for Stevie? I'm curious about his change. He seems to continue to be inconsistent, but my gut tells me that he is taking better shots, so I would hope his shot quality has improved.

Thanks for this cool stuff!

Damn, I completely missed that, thanks for calling it up. His SSQ is up a ton, from 0.98 to 1.06, while his PPS is also up from 1.01 to 1.03. However, since he's at -0.03 for SSM this year compared to +0.03 last, he is down -.06 YoY. I would much rather take his PPS numbers this year though, and hope he starts hitting his great looks at a higher rate.

As for your question about volume, that's a huge piece and definitely contributes to the wow factor. FY 2022, those 6 returners took a combined 853 FGAs (per Synergy which always is off by a bit compared to the actual box score), so 26.6 a game. So far this year they are already at 810 in 16 games, which lands at about 24 additional shots a game this year. Your OMax v TK comparison in this regard was spot on, too.  Great call outs.
