Kam's NBA Potential?
« on: October 19, 2022, 09:42:21 PM »
The kid has a gorgeous jumper and with range.  He also has pretty solid size.  Will he get to the level where he can go with power downhill to score or create in the paint?

Mopes question if he is even considered a returning starter.

Mopes question if he is even considered a returning starter.

I think he has tremendous potential if he increases his strength and overall handles.

He'll have to develop on the defensive end and get stronger. At his size may also need to develop some point skills. I could see it but it needs to be as more than just a shooter.

I'll withhold judgment on the NBA potential of any of our players, including Kam, until I see how they perform against the best teams on our schedule throughout this season.

That's my "Todd Mayo Rule." (Yes, hard as it might be to believe, there actually were some talking about Mayo's NBA potential early in his MU career.)

Kam is perfect for college basketball.  I think Zaide is our next NBA star.

He didn't start playing competitve basketball until just before High School. Was a standout at the NBAPA Top 100 Camp.

His game looks so smooth and yet has so much room for growth with how talented and raw he still is.

Will he get looks, being on a bottom 3 team in the conference?

Mayo briefly made it to the Knicks G League team . He got in a fight with a teammate and that was the end for him .

Why do you think it should have been hard to believe that some people thought Todd Mayo had a chance at the NBA based on what he showed early in his MU career?

He was step slow, or not quick enough yet, had trouble defending quicker guards, which also means he had trouble getting open or getting to the hole.  Time will tell but I see at least a few years before he is ready to move on.

Right now, I’d say no NBA future.

But that could change. He only has one good skill now - shooting 3s. He needs to become a waaaaay better defender. He’s a hard working kid so it is possible. Also needs a much better handle. We’ll see what happens the next couple years.

It’s hard to be an NBA player. A 6-3 non-PG with a couple of decent months as a college team’s 6th man … NBA teams weren’t salivating at the prospect, and there was no reason for objective Marquette fans to believe otherwise.

Here’s hoping Jones becomes a consistently better player for Marquette.

82,

I agree with you.  None of us has any idea of his NBA potential after one year.  Let’s see what Kam does this year and we will have a wayyyyy better idea of his NBA potential.  I’m hoping Kam is a phenomenal player for MU and it’s leads to bigger and better things for the young man.

Yes, the dream is for him to blow up to the point that he stands out from all of the other 6'3 shooting guards.

Lots of good nuggets on Fanta's Twitter feed as he watched practice today.

Could I be right??  What we need is a little more drive and kick in the h-c so he can shred the nets.  Just sayin.

Stevie is going to have to score a little bit.  Hard vertical drives, use of the shot fake, buckets, free throws, enough points to keep the defense honest.

If he can hit threes at a 40% clip or higher the rest of his time here, even if he doesn’t show much else, he will get a shot in the summer league/g league at minimum. I expect him to score around 15 PPG this year

We need a consistent 2nd scorer or they will key on Kam.

I think Kam will be a high level college player. I don't see him making the NBA other than maybe a Vander Blue type experience. I don't see the NBA level PG skills and I don't see the body of an NBA SG. Those are two things that you can't teach. His only path to the NBA is to become an absolute lockdown defender (while still improving his offense to NBA levels).

At this point I think both OMax and Kolek are more likely NBA players. Possibly Gold as well (there's always a role for near 7 footers who can shoot).

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

I don’t see NBA potential in any of these guys. At least right now. I think all 3 will be very good college players if they stay.

OMax is a small 6’8” who isn’t quick enough to play the wing. Kolek doesn’t have quicks or the shot. Kam is one dimensional and small for a SG.

But I think one or two of these guys will end up on All BE teams.
