I can't believe how bad those late UNC possessions were.  Good grief

Absolutely.   Guys playing hero ball.

Good question. Love is good at jacking 'em up quick, and UNC has been rebounding great, although no Bacot now.

Yeah, I think I foul up 3 if can do it immediately on the pass.

EDIT: Or not!

Bill Self chose not to foul up 3 in the NCAA title game with a guy who had been making incredible 3s on the floor for UNC. As many of us have argued 1,000 times, it's not a no-brainer.

The situation was almost identical to the Creighton game when Shaka did not foul. The only difference is that Creighton made the shot.

MuggsyB

You have to foul there.  Especially with Bacot out of the game.

I'm sorry, Agbaji may have been third or fourth on my MOP ballot.

I mean - you don't have to...

Caleb Love lost them that game. Too bad he didn't shoot like that against Marquette

Apparently a Hall of Fame, 2-time NCAA champion, bazillion-time Big 12 champion coach disagrees with you.

UNC was gassed...kids legs were dead.  Emotional Duke game+playing 5.5 players all weekend, I feel is one of the only reasons to explain flat jump shots and tripping and falling all over the place.  An argument could be made Garcia lost them this game.

I saw .01 seconds of gold in the background of a UNC clip. Any Providence that you noticed?

It's really dumb to compare this comeback to the 1963 Ramblers.

In addition to coaching his team to within a few points of a national title in his first year, Hubert Davis is just an impressive guy.

I could listen all day to him talk about basketball and his team and philosophy and life. Even his little in-game interviews are always great.

I don't know him at all, so I don't know what kind of person he is. But based on what I've seen and heard, I'd totally let my kid play for him if I were the parent of a HS star.

What was with UNC's end of the floor in the second half? Bacot's foot slips and rolls as he turns, no contact. Love's foot slips and rolls as he turns, no contact. Manek slips like 3 times on the last out of bounds play, no contact.

Carolina's offensive plan the second half was bad. Bacot's strength is not one on one post ups. It's hitting the glass hard. They needed more dribble drives from their guards and either throw it up and let Bacot go get it, or kick to Manek or the other guard on the perimeter.

He could have made that shot.  The result doesn't mean it was the right decision.

They shot 31% for the game and closer to 20% from distance.  That shows you how big rebounding can be if you have the team to get you extra possessions.

LOL. A much better argument could be made that Garcia leaving helped get the Tar Heels into the Dance and to the brink of a championship.

Agreed. Their season completely turned around when Garcia left. I can't find the quote but Hubert Davis essentially said the same. Something along the lines of "when we decided to go with this group/rotation." I don't think it's a coincidence they were a lot better once he left the team.

Prediction:  Bacot is really hurt, and is going to be ineffective.  He's trying to hide the pain in the warm ups, but he isn't much of an actor.

Great take, idiot.

Given how much is paid to lousy coaches who accomplish nothing, Davis seems like a bargain.

From the Charlotte Observer:

UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis is eligible to receive an additional $575,000 in compensation following a 72-69 loss to Kansas.

His NCAA tournament bonuses break down as follows:

▪ $25,000 for participating in the NCAA tournament;
▪ $75,000 for making the second round of the NCAA tournament;
▪ $75,000 for making the Sweet 16;
▪ $200,000 for making the Elite Eight; and
▪ $200,000 for making the Final Four.

Had UNC won the national championship game, Davis would have earned an additional $250,000.

Davis earns a total of $1.8 million annually to coach at UNC. Of that, $1.05 million is paid from the school ($400,000 in base salary, $600,000 in supplemental salary and a $50,000 expense account), $500,000 is from a media partnership with Learfield sports and $250,000 comes from Nike.

Next season, Davis' annual school pay increases to $1.15 million.

The Sultan

I am happy for Kansas.  They were fun to watch.  I hope that all the players get some extra cash as a bonus as well.

I am also glad for the message this victory sends.  The NCAA is ineffective and amateurism is a sham.
