Kevin Willard seems like a real piece of trash.

Also Jay Bee got to MSG/NYC just in time to learn ft's matter. Love it.

You're telling me. My daughter is a Georgetown alum, so we're here to the bitter end.

And wow...it was bitter.

Yes but at -1.5. Had the same bet on UVA and lost that one on a meaningless half court shot, so when Rice pulled up uncontested from just inside half court I almost lost my mind  ;D

That's a back breaking loss for X. Would have been good for the conference to get another team in, but they're toast now.

Whelp, that's 1.67 million out of the Big East's pocket. Thanks Butler.

I don't understand Maryland's attraction to Willard unless he's using his media pals to get another raise.  Maryland can do better.  Real Peter Principle situation.

Xavier's inability to put the game away at the line are why FTs matter.  I know what JB means when he says they don't, it's the volume of attempts that matter but in that situation, they absolutely matter.  It may end up costing Xavier the tournament, a coach his job and the league money.  Make your FTs and Scruggs isn't in position to make such a colossal mistake

Yep. Of course, Scruggs missed 3 of the FTs in the last minute. And committed 3 stoopid fouls, including the real idiotic one at the end of regulation.

It truly was a well-earned loss by X.

Scruggs has been playing like he's betting against Xavier this year, especially lately

I imagine Steel said "When he makes the FT, we are fouling up 3".  Scruggs missed the FT, and proceeded to foul at half court,  forgetting the part about we foul up 3, AFTER making the FT.

What a colossal choke job.  I had flashbacks to Wojo screaming foul in a tied game, thinking we were behind.

And, after 5 minutes of stumbling, Tim Brando and Raft can't seem to understand what happened.  !  Brando kept saying you foul up 2, just before the opponent shoots a 3.  WHAT????  Unbelievable!  Man is Brando bad.  I like Raft, but his best days are in the rear view mirror.  He was mostly silent during all of this.

I'm glad this was driving someone else nuts! I posted about it above, as well. I could not believe Brando wasn't getting it. Moments later, Raft twice brought up Scruggs getting "a blow" to start OT, and wondering when Steele would bring him back. His intention foul with 8 seconds left was his fifth-that's why he was out. Brando didn't correct that either. Sort of seemed to me like they were being deferential to each other in not pointing out major blunders. Very strange.

I still like Raft though.

This.  A lot of broadcast crews work this way.  I sometimes can't believe Bill Walton's play-by-play guy doesn't just punch him mid-sentence.

The attraction is he's an established head coach with a couple of conference accomplishments but no success in the NCAAs that you can sell to the fanbase as a guy who knows what it takes but can do more with our resources.

Also, he'll take the call. That's the most important thing. He clearly wants out and was quite public a few years ago about that so Maryland allows him to move without being too far from the community of friends the family has developed in north Jersey as the Iona/Hall coach.

WellsstreetWanderer

IMHO Scruggs cost them the game :  3 unnecessary fouls in less than a minute allowed Butler to tie the game and then he has to sit out the OT. That said  Butler had 3 players foul out in regulation and it didn't affect them with their Freshman going en fuego .

We definitely want Prov over Butier.

MU in perfect position to win the BET.

He's been bad. But the thing is that he also made two incredible shots down the stretch ... so he did a hell of a job hiding that the fix was on!

Yep, Brando and Raftery couldn't have been more clueless on the foul. I said, "Wut?" about 5 times as they kept (incorrectly) saying what happened. Of course, saying "Wut?" after Raftery talks is nothing new.

Raftery gives precious little insight. He mumbles coaching jargon under his breath, he's often just wrong about even simple things, he kowtows shamelessly to coaches, he makes obscure references that nobody younger than 50 understand, and he lives to throw out his little catchphrases.

But ...

He's like everybody's grandpa, he seems like a really good guy, he obviously loves college hoops, and he's not as obnoxious as Dickie V, so that explains his popularity. He's good for the game, even if he's not especially good at helping viewers know what's going on in a game.

Raftery is 78.  His best days are behind him.  Maybe he should give politics a try.

Good article.

I get that Bill's a character and an ambassador to the game, esp out west.  I've just heard him openly antagonize his partner more than once. I can almost hear what the other guy is thinking in the two seconds of dead air that follows.

Money quote: 'Pasch: "The first time I did a game with Bill was the NBA Finals in 2006. He claims it never happened."'
